ok LR gurus...

I was just thinking of a way to need less disk space.

Is it possible to specify a location for catalog data, the .lrdata files and such, AND the .xmp sidecar files on the hard drive, while keeping the cr2's on dvd?

So just to be clear, i have my D: drive. I want to keep folders called;

D:\weddings\2008\johnmary this folder will hold the .lrdata and .xmp files

E:\ is all my CR2's. Is there a setting to hold the xmp's and lrdata's in a different location than your cr2s?

TIA

You can't have xmp's elsewhere - those have to be next to the raw files. You can do without xmp files though, as it's all stored primarily in the catalog.

Personally I'd buy another hard drive rather than using dvd's for the cr2's - yes, that can be a different drive from the catalog/previews.

I guess i need to refine my workflow then.

1. Import from CF card to HD location.
2. Create Catalog in same directory.
3. Shut off sidecar
4. Save JPG's to different location.
5. Burn CR2's to dvd.

Is there a more efficient way that i'm missing?

Finished CR2's to DVD is ok, it'd just be a pain trying to work on them when they're on DVD, that's all. I still think hard drives are quicker though! ;)

Your general workflow looks ok though mumbles.

If you are going to be handling DVD's all the time, then that sounds like a very risky method for archiving, unless you make 2 copies whcih is very tefious. I know, I used to do this a few years ago.

Larger hard drives are cheap, these days... buy 2 and use one for backup. Use the second one as an external drive.

Brendan, I keep no files except processed files in folders on my HD. My main LR Cat is on an external WD 1 Ter Hard drive and my backup is on another. I then back up to disc so I have 3 copies of all plus the processed on my my computer.
