To get good clear pictures are tripods a must? I didn't know where to post this, so I did it in this section.

If you're using a flash a quicker speed shutter, it's not necessary.

If you're slowing down the shutter, and/or not using a flash, I would say that it is a big plus to have a tripod. I saw a good one with a quick release head at Wal-Mart the other day for $25.

you will require tripods in following cases :

1.for photography without flash (Night Scens, Fire works, concerts etc)
2.if you are shooting in night mode of P&S digital camera
3.If you are shooting long zooms (Specially non IS).
4.Slower shutter speed.

hope this helps

Cheers,
Sam

The tripod is a very useful tool for photography. Be sure to get a decent/good ones like Velbon, Manfrotto, Gitzo etc.

Tripods are also useful for doing panoramic photos - a feature which most of the compact Canon cameras have.

You can get much better results by using a tripod if you're intending to stitch more than a few photos together.

A unipod, while not as steady as a tripod, can be an enormous help for "non mission critical" photography. These are smaller and much easier to carry around.
