The Sekonic L358 is a great flash/ambient incident light meter. If you are just starting out, consider some Alien Bees or SP Excalibur 3200's.

If you want a cheaper, yet reasonable competitive lightmeter to the Seconic - you could go after the Minolta Autometer 5 F (V f). Cheaper but very precise. No transmitter can be attached - as to the Seconic has this feature.
Else i recommend Elinchrome or Bowens for the flashheads - if you have the money, i would go for Broncolor or Profoto - but they come at a cost.
What about secondhand ???

I have the Sekonic L358 and the Alien Bees (800s) and love them. This is my first foray into studio lighting and the meter and lighting work great, even for a newbee like me. Highly recommended.
