Firstly forgive me if this has been done before or if it is in the wrong section. I have recently bought some ND Grad filters and while I could find a lot of pictures taken with them, I couldn't find any before and after that really showed the effect the filter has. This doesnt have to just apply to ND Grads as I know there is one good site for that already, it could be warm up's, sunsets cooling etc.

I think it would be good to have a sample thread like the lens samples have with a before and after so anyone asking about filters and their effects can come straight to it and see the effects for themselves.

This was a test shot without my Hitech ND Grads on a 350D with Sigma 10-20 lens.

This is with a 3 stop (0.9) on the sky and a 2 stop (0.6) on the river using Hitech soft grads, Lee foundation filter holder and wideangle adapter ring again on the 10-20..

There's already plenty of sites with this information all over the internet (even most filter mfr sites)...some people just don't want to take the time to search and sort it out. Which is why there is post after post of which filter/what filter.

Since I'm about to buy a few GND's..I'll ask a rather noobish question..
IF you filter the sky with a .9 AND filter the water with a .6; isn't this ths same as using a .3 on the sky only and under exposing the picture?

I thought the reason for using GND's were to separate one part of the picture from the other. In my mind; using GND's on both parts of the picture are almost cancelling each other out; Am I off on this?

If you can do the math its better. Yes you are right if you do both....just fix one with the camera then ballence the other with a filter. Unless you are going for a specific depth of field where changing the appature is not an option, only use one. If you cant change the appature then you have to use 2.
