I have read as a tip on this forum that focusing 1/3 into a scene is a great way to give the depth that you are going for in a landscape picture. What is a good way to focus at the right distance?

There are many threads on this forum with respect to where to focus landscape shots.
My take on it is that you are going to lose some sharpness either at the forground end or the background end depending on where you focus. Thats your choice.

Do a search for "hyper focal distance" and do some reading - then experiment with what works for you.
