 Kinda depends what your expectations are ;)

For what it's worth, I like my one.

If you will need to shoot it wide open it may disappoint you. I did side by test of the Tamron at 28, 50 & 70mm wide open with the Canon 24-70mm 2.8L and there is no comparison. The Canon blows it away. I ended up buying the Canon, sure it is 3x the money but it is now my "leave on" lens. I got it instead of replacing my 10D with a 20D. It is that good! The Tamron is soft wide open and the Canon remains sharp.

Only a bad copy of the Tamron is soft wide open. Mine is virtually as sharp at f/2.8 as it is at f/8. If you get one that is soft at f/2.8, exchange it.

I agree with pcasciola. My Tamron is sharp wide open.

In my opinion, the Canon 24-70's only advantages are material quality and focusing speed.

Seems like Tamron is having quality control problems with that lens.

Most seem to have a sharp one, but there are seldom posts popping up with test shots of it being less sharp.

I strongly beleive in "you get what you pay for"... My sigma experience with 70-200 convinced me. I'm saving up for 24-70 L right now

I have the 28-75 as my everyday lens and I love it. Here's some examples with my Drebel and 420ex flash:

I'm no expert, but I think these pictures do this lens justice.

Ditto, it's no L, so if you own L and expect it to be simliar, its not.
If you compare it to any "average" lens, you will be very satisfied.

My third copy was my good one, still slightly soft wide open, definitly not f/8 but it's pretty good. If you can, buy this lens in person so you can test it. Watch for uneven sharpness (more sharp on the left then right or vice versa). Also watch for softness wide open. Check for softness at both at 28mm and 75mm at f/8. These are the most common defects.

Cheers

I am not saying the Tamron is not a good lens for the money, but if you are shooting wide open and/or making large prints (11x14 and up) there is a difference. I use my 24-70 L almost exclusively for weddings now and it has never let me down. I have heard many people who say the Tamron is sharp wide open and just as many who say it is soft at 2.8. So I did my own test and all I can say is that the copy I tested was soft wide open compared to the Canon.

Tests of the Tamron, Canon 50mm 1.8, Canon 100mm 2.8 Macro, and the 18-55 kit lens.

I really like my tamron, it seems a little sharper when it's closed down a bit, but that could just be me getting the DOF wrong - at 2.8 it's easy enough to get it not quite right.

My copy was very sharp wide open, if one isn't then it is a dud.

Is the 28-75 Di any good on a film body?

I want to purchase a better wide zoom.
I was looking at the Canon 28-135 IS but wasn't sure the IS would make up for the slower speed. I'd love the L 24-70mm but the price has me a little gun shy.

Sigma and Tamron both have sub $400 glass in the 2.8 range will I be happy with Di and DG glass on my Elan film body...I will go Digital one day but I don't want a digital only lens, I still have lots of film I want to continue to shoot. And I don't have the cash for a ton of glass all over the place I like to buy once and be done.

I'm going along with the majority.

Love my Tamron lens. Also, very satisfied with it wide open.

MrChad.

My Tamron does not touch my digital bodies very often, I have the Canon version for that :D It does well on film cameras, I have not noticed anything out of the ordinary.

Bought my one second hand from a camera shop and my lens is front focusing. Have taken it back to get calbrated. Was offered a refund but I like the sharpness (even wide open), got it for a good price and I am prepared to wait.

I purchased this lens recently and gave it a good workout last weekend. Was really impressed with the results, mine was sharp and people raved over the photos when shown on a screen (jpeg with no post processing)...

Gets my vote...

Hi,
Surf to www.doorhof.nl/models 99% of the pictures are with the Tamron.

RichBased on other people's feedback on this forum, there is about a 1 in 8 chance that you will get a bad copy. I would recommend when you get it you check wide open at 28mm, 75mm and somewhere in between for sharpness, and compare it to some samples people have posted on this forum. Most of the bad copies seem to be way off, like the one on this thread:

Perhaps I just got very lucky, but my copy seems sharp from wide open to stopped down. It also seems to be the lens I keep on my 20D about 90% of the time. I am very satisfied with this lens in all aspects.

It's a great lens, I use it for everything including weddings. I took this shot with it on Saturday...Dean

Another example for those of you who are still iffy about this lens. I think it gives vibrant colors.

Depends on one's taste, the Tamron 28-75 will give a picture a warmer skin tone when comparing to Canon's consumer grade standard zoom lens. This is generally my experience with mine.

Correct me if I am missing something.
