Was shooting on 12x and noticed that the camera isnt focusing right when I manually set to infinity
its strange because ive already shot the moon sharp with the same settings
tried IS on/off and safety MF on/off, same thing, also its not camera shake as its also blurry on 1/1000
and before shooting, the image looks sharp in the zoomed square...
100% crops below
ISO100 1/400 F6.3 72mm

ISO100 1/400 F5 72mm

ISO100 1/400 F5.6 72mm

tried the focus one step down from infinity and got worse :(

what does the uncropped photo look like, the thumbnail of the moon looks like it has grass or something around it, and the plane looke like it has somehting on the edges?? I am just wondering if all of that for some reason messed with the focus??
Were you shooting in M?
I realize it's not the case but it looks like you were shooting the moon on like iso1600 or something, do you use CHDK, that maybe there is a setting in there that you were using and forgot to turn off??

The moon I shot behind some branches but the others were clear, this shouldnt be a problem when using manual focus
Yes, shooting in M
I use the chdk but its really on ISO100, the noise looks normal to me, it appears more on these shots for them being underexposed

are either of you using a telephoto lens for those shots, my moon shots don't come out anywhere near that clear...

No sir, just the camera by itself. With tripod. Mine is also cropped
Which mode did you use ?

I was using the full Manual mode
here is probably my best one taken a couple of nights ago, I didn't crop it, but it looks even worse if I do

Have you tried using a tripod?

I put my S5 on Program, under the Func button I have it set to vivid and cloudy to take my moon pics, staying with the cloudy pick. You do have to play with the focus a few times when you push down the shutter button halfway to get it to focus. These were taken with no extra lenses and above settings. Some nights I can't get the moon to focus as well and other nights I can't. I didn't use a tripod for these photos. You also have to play with the zoom length too to find the sharpest focus.
A series of new moon shots put together with psp7

This is one shot that I get alot of comments on. As I was focusing on the moon an airplane flew in front of it. I don't know why the moon was so big and the plane so small.

Here's one I took as the sun was rising one morning

This was a series of shots taken new years day 08 as the sun rose. Again put together with psp7 and as you can see, not the sharpest focus.

here's another taken in the middle of January

This one was taken as the sun was setting...

This one was taken with the sun setting behind me as I looked eastward as the moon rose

I had it on a tripod for that shot. I am going to try to take a few shots tonight, but try some different settings

nice do you prefer that over canons TC-DC58B, I am just wondering if the lens is better, the price was better or both, or whatever the reason you chose to go with that tele. I am looking into buying a lens and was juust going to buy the canon, but I have seen good things about the sony, and that pic looks damn good. Also do you still haveto set it in the camera that you are using the dc58b if you are using any teleconverter???? Thanks and sorry this thread got a little hijacked...

That is a great shot. I don't know why, but the image makes the moon into the shape of a black and white watermelon with the branch end broken completely off. Like I said that is a great shot. imo

I think my S5 is broken :D
I just spent a couple hours messing with settings and checking pics, and messing with settings and over and over again, still this is the best I can come up with, I don't get how you get those shots out of the same exact camera, I have tried every setting I can adjust in this thing. it is getting a little frustrating...

or maybe this, but they are nowhere near those shots...

Another sample of the problem
first the one manually set on infinite it focuses on the fence
http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/2335/img9381no8.jpg
changed to automatic focus, then it goes for real on infinite
http://img295.imageshack.us/img295/9545/img9385ur3.jpg
tomorrow will try setting the focus before zooming and see if changes something...

are you guys using full digital zoom, or just full optical zoom and no digital zoom???
I just don't get what I could be doing wrong

every camera I have has digital zoom turned off, you need to learn some post processing to get them to turn out the way you see them. search the forums, you should find some good reads.
