Underhand or overhand?!
I've always assumed that an underhand grip (palm supporting lens base) was the natural way to shoot. However, I'm suprised by the increasing number of people I've seen using an overhand grip with the fingertips holding the lens with thumb below! Does it make rotation of the zoom/focus ring easier or something? I just find it so awkward! I've always thought overhand method was an amateur-ish way to hold the camera, but then again perhaps I'm just biased...
So, how do you grip your lens?

Underhand... My understanding is that if you are already putting downward pressure on the camera with your right hand on the shutter button, you should counter that pressure and support the bulk of the weight with your left.

Underhand for best stability. You pretty much answered your own question.;) Just because everyone is doing it, doesn't make it right.

I personally think underhanded is better as it allows you to support the gear with the left and shoot with the right.
It's a pet peeve of mine to see folks shoot overhanded but it's a silly thing to get upset about as it's the image that counts. As long as you can make it work, I don't care if you shoot with both eyes closed while hanging upside down.

Underhand b/c I can sort of rest my elbow on my hip to further steady the shot

Left hand under the lens with the left elbow tucked into the chest. Right hand holding the camera body with the right elbow tucked into the chest.

i never even paid attention, nor did i read the manual before picking up my first dslr=350D im still with.
i did the underhand and used my left eye, which is how the manual says and best way to hold it.
so for me, underhand, helps hold all the weight to stabalize it better, for standing, i use the shoulder cup with left hand cupping over right hand.
turns me into a human tripod and works awesome
