Just wondering if any of you have any opinions on a portable hard drive that you can copy images off a CF III card with without needing a PC? Something that will read the card or connect directly to the camera.

I use a Nextodi drive (http://www.nextodi.com/en/), but there are plenty on the market with nice big colour screens to view your images. I personally wanted speed of downloading so I can get the card back in the camera, for which the Nextodi is the fastest you can get.

I have used Vosonic/Wolverine devices in the past without any problems.

Checkout the hyperdrives at hyperdrive.com. They have several models depending on features. They are one of the fastest PSDs available. Also, from personal experience, they are reliable.

If it's purely for backup purposes, then the suggestions above will suffice nicely... However, if you want a viewer as well as backup unit, the Epson P-series are fantastic!

I have an old Epson P-2000. It's useful, but slow. The screen is gorgeous and I love seeing my wedding photos right there to show people.

I had a P-2000 once, Suzy, its a beautiful object and really great for sharing images but the speed was a real disappointment.
On my Nextodi, downloading 1GB in under 50 seconds is a real boon in the field.

It's unfortunately, a UK product. I wish they had them here.

That's a great price. When I get around to it, I'll have to get one of those. I can always use on as I travel so much now.

Digimate II - ebay - you put your own drive in it .
Will read a bunch of different cards but slow - or the drive is slow .
USB 2.0 . Great for taking pictures along for downloading to computer or for uploading from computer .
Buy a good USB cable - I use the one from camera .
