I used to own the Canon Powershot A510 and it died on me
(nope, make that a case of my daughter slamming it against the wall. She's seven and claimed it was an accident!)

And so two days ago, I became a proud owner of a G9 and honestly, I'm so overwhelmed by it, I havent touched it since!

It's like...owning a magnificent masterpiece and afraid of handling it wrongly...:o

Any tips on what I should or should not do? Especially since I just got it...stuffs to do before I take it out for outings etc....:o

Never fear, it's a fairly durable piece of work.

Get yourself a wrist strap and you may feel a little more comfortable. http://www.prostrap.com/ - Good quality leather ones

Perhaps also consider the third party thumb rest and hand grip, (makes it much more natural to hold). http://www.lensmateonline.com/newsite/order_G7_1.html

Great little camera which has produced some excellent images for me BUT it does not like operating in low light. Keep it to 200ASA max and it should do well.

I would get a screen protector for the LCD shield... it smears so easy and scratches pretty easy too.

Well, I've gotten the neck strap which came along with the package and yup, the screen protector too...

Managed to muster the courage to bring out my 'new baby' to the park just now and migod, the stress that I had with it..hahaa..

I mean..I was so scared stiff of mishandling it, it was really like taking a newborn out...!I had to make sure I was gentle, I was not exposing it too much, my other kids dont come too near etc.....

But the pictures were excellent! love, love, love everything!
Still learning to handle and play with it :)

Thank you, guys! :)

Wait till you get your first SLR and or L lens. They are a lot larger, and beefier, but the first scuff will make you boo hoo.. LOL

Just stay here in the G9 forum and you will be fine. Venture off into the DSLR forums and you will be hyped into buying a DSLR whether you need it or not. THIS IS A WARNING! :)

Last week I was able to visit the gallery of Jim Brandenburg, in Ely, Minn. If you are not familiar with his work, you need to be. He is an artist by any definition! He spent most of his working years as a photographer for National Geographic, and has since gone to doing his own thing. Anyway, in reading some of his articles, one of his most recent got into the subject of cameras. His comment was that todays compact cameras have gotten so good, that it's all that camera most people will ever need. As photographers go, Jim and I don't belong in the same universe, but I thought it was an interesting comment from one of the best!

Hey wait a minute, DSLR people are humans too! I got a G9 to always be in my pocket and love it. I also don't try to compare it to DSLRs cause it's not the same game.

Mom, even though it is cute to look at and fondle, take pictures with it, that's what it loves most!

Keep it away from your daughter. ;-)

You also must contribute to the challenges here. I promise....you'll become a better photographer and you will love each week's assignment.

Check out the Strobist blog, whole lot of Pj's using the G9 as their everyday camera. David has found a way to sync a camera flash at 1/2500 with his G9, using it on assignments. I have a G5 and if it wasn't for my trying to upgrade my DSLR's I'd grab a G9 in a minute. You might check Lensmate for some adaptors and a grip http://www.lensmateonline.com/newsite/G7.html

congrats! great camera, you'll love it i reckon. i have a G7 and love it too. in many conditions, the printed pics looks as good as an SLR to the untrained eye...

i would recommended getting a flash and tripod for low light conditions. really makes a huge difference since quality really drops from ISO 400 onwards.

I just picked one up also. Love this little camera. Wish I picked it up sooner. I was traveling with my SLR equipment for a few months, and I swear I cursed it every single day because of the weight. I was traveling with just 1 backpack full of necessities. Having to carry another bag full of SLR equipment was a pain, not to mention a liability. I think I wouldve taken more pictures if I had the G9 during my trip. Looking forward to using the camera during my Vegas trip this weekend, and looking forward to sharing some photos with you guys.

that's one strong pocket!
I'm finding it a wee bit heavy despite having handled tons of diapers, bulky strollers, carrying 15kg fidgeting toddlers etc :-P

but yeah, will try to bring it out more often...

hee..I know.
It's just that...I'm still overwhelmed and such.
I did just that 2 days ago and cos I havent finished reading the manual and I was still nervous, I was merely snapping away without really going through the different modes, settings etc...so the pictures I took were pretty so-so, nothing spectacular..

case in point :

but I still like it, tho'...:)
will need to practice, practice and practice, that's for sure :)

LOL! oh yes, that's for sure!
She's been told to keep away from the camera by a 1 metre radius

challenges? I'd like that...:)
wasnt aware of it but will go check it out..tks Kevan :)

Hey MegaTron :)
sorry to hear about that trip and that bag!
I was pre-warned about DSLR owners about such 'misadventures' and to stay away from getting one for it's sheer weight and bulk..

and now, I'm looking forward to your photos of Vegas :)
have a good and safe trip! :)

actually even to the trained eye, the pics are really good for smaller prints... :)

i'm going to Paris and New York next month for a hol and have been seriously thinking about leaving my 40D at home and all it's associated accessories. that's cos i tried out my G7 last night on a Gorillapod at ISO 80 at home and the pics were really, really sharp. the problem is, my wife is going to take her XTI/400D, so i just know that i'm going to be envious of her. so now, i'm going to bring along my 40D and G7! :D

i think i might wind up using the G7 for landscapes at night though cos i'm only bringing the Gorillapod along as my sole source of support.

thanks, but don't get your hopes up too high - still learning... :D

actually, i'm going to travel as light as possible. 40D, Tamron 17-50, Sigma 30, Gorillapod DSLR, Quikpod, G7, spare batteries and chargers and that's about it. am leaving all the other lenses at home.

that's about as light as it gets for an SLR, in this case 40D. i guess i could always go Sigma 18-200 OS and Canon 50mm f/1.8, but my wife will be using those. eventually i'd like to get an Olympus E-420 with pancake lens.
