Hey everyone! It was nice to meet you all, even if I didn't really get a chance to chat with you. (And I'll have to meet you next time, Geek). Here's the tutorial on how I did the editing that I showed you guys - the desaturated gritty look - with one of my older pictures. This is kinda the same as the so called "Dave Hill" look, but I don't like making mine seem super "HDR" and super fake looking.
Before:
http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l192/jnakatsu/_MG_2255-2.jpg
After:
http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l192/jnakatsu/_MG_2255.jpg

Anyways, what I do (in Lightroom) is raise the fill light significantly - to the point where it looks washed out. Then I take the blacks and raise them up until it looks how I want it. At this point your colors are going to be extremely saturated, so the next step is to bring the saturation and or vibrance way down to where you want it. I also bump up the contrast, clarity, as well as recovery a bit. As far as curves go, I brighten the lights, especially highlights, and darken the darks and shadows. Lastly, to get the correct color toning, I use the split tone slider. To get that kind of green tone, I selected a yellowish green color for shadows, and bumped up the saturation a bit. Then to bring back the skin coloring I selected a red for highlights, and again brought the saturation up to where I wanted.

If you want to know what my exact settings were for a starting place, they are as follows. Just remember that a lot of this is to taste, so what worked for me might not work for you. Also, when using this method I tend to not make it not quite so extreme, but for the sake of example, I did it here.

White Balance to whatever looks best.
Exposure +0
Recovery 14
Fill Light 77
Blacks 55

Brightness +50
Contrast +64

Presence
Clarity 49
Vibrance -69
Saturation -71

Tone Curve
Highlights +43
Lights +21
Darks -21
Shadows -5

Split Toning
Highlights:
Hue 0
Saturation 7
Balance 0
Shadows:
Hue 73
Saturation 12

I didn't sharpen this one, but you can sharpen to taste.

Enjoy.
thanks man!

It was really great to finally meet you guys in person. I had a great time and I'm really looking forward to the next meet. I learned a lot at this meet...I learned I have a loooooong way to go in this hobby, but at least it'll give me something to do for a long time to come.

Here a few of mine. Just quick and dirty PP in DPP.

Chris - Nice series! Thanks Norris!nice series chris. my only complaint is that the photos seem to be slightly oversaturated/over-vibranceslidered.Thanks Kent! I really don't do too much PP work to my photos, just brightness adjustment, white balance adjustment, a little contrast, a little color tone, a little color saturation and some sharpening in DPP. Here are the original shots straight from the camera with no PP.

From the Honolulu POTN Meet XII Organizer: I'd like to say thanks to everyone for making this a very enjoyable experience for me. We had a good turn out (9 members!), I got to meet you and put a face to your user name, I saw how you guys shoot and got to see some really, really nice equipment. You're an awesome bunch of guys and I'm glad to know all of you.

Thank you Lincoln and Brandon for bringing your laptops and showing us how Lightroom 2 and Aperature 2 work. And thank you Lincoln, Brandon, Norris and John for going over your PP techniques. It was a real good learning experience and got me wanting to push my PP work past the simple adjustments I make in DPP. I recently got Photoshop CS3 (but haven't installed it on my old computer...planning to build a newer, faster one soon) and will be picking up Lightroom 2 in the near future. Then maybe I can find my own "style", whatever that may be.

Really looking forward to the next Meet!

:) Chris

:) Chris

Thanks for organizing the meet Chris. I've never been to Foster Botanical Gardens and now that I have, I think I'll be visiting there again ;)

Thanks to Chris for organizing it,

Thank you for setting it up, Chris. You're welcome, guys. Actually the thanks should go to the organizers of the previous Meets, I just followed what they did when they were organizing earlier Meets. Plus I had lots of help during the Meet.

I'm not a very adventurous guy...I don't mess with my photos much and haven't tried cropping/trimming at all. Well yesterday I decided to give the Trim Tool in DPP a try and these are the results...

Here's a candid of Barry from Honolulu POTN Meet XII...boy, I need a longer telephoto lens...
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3156/2734927886_9f4caee7a2_o.jpg

After playing with the Trim Tool...wow, instant zoom!

Here's a candid of Norris...

Cropped horizontally...

Cropped vertically...

I learned something new...don't be afraid to try different things when PPing your photos.

Cool...it's neat to see how different people decide to shoot the same object. Very different results and all unique. Thanks for putting all the totem pole images into a single post.
