Thanks for starting and organizing the Meet. Hmm food... Let's not mess up the free room....so shoot, lunch, then meet at the Y? If people miss the shoot, they can at least meet at the YMCA.

....so shoot, lunch, then meet at the Y?Sounds good to me. Lots of places to eat nearby.

Do we do this all in one day (a Sunday as suggested in the other thread) or split the meet up between two days? I'd prefer a one day event (easier to explain to the wife).

Hey guys,

Sorry I've been MIA on the posting here for a while... It's the iPhone craze! We STILL haven't slowed down. My schedule's always up in the air, but I'd love to meet and watch yall in action so I'll definitely try to make it to the event, Aug. 2,3, either or sound good to me though I'd prefer a Sunday I think as I'm scheduled more often on Saturdays. Will try to check back on occasion and keep up-to-date on the thread to see how things unfold.

We still haven't decided on a weekend for the upcoming Meet. It's narrowed down to either the weekend of the 2nd/3rd or the 9th/10th. I'm free both weekends.

branmuffindonburi is up for August 3rd (Sunday). How's this day for everyone?

On second thought, I've been scheduled on Sunday these past few weeks, so Saturday may indeed be a better day. I get called in on Saturday sometimes though if the iPhones come in (hahaha). But I'll do my best. Don't schedule the meeting on behalf of me.

It's looking like Honolulu POTN Meet XII will be on Saturday, August 2nd based on the number of members who can make this date. Is this date okay with everyone who wants to attend?

I know some members won't be able to make it so there may be another Meet in early September (tentative).

I though you were comparing with your 17-55?I think I was comparing the 17-85 to the 28-135 because those are the two lenses that are available as kit lenses for the 40D. And I've seen threads in the Lens forum that ask which lens would be a better choice to get.

I will look into reserving the room at the Y. I'm not sure if i can definitely get the Board Room. It might be in use from 11-2ish? Outside of that I will keep you all posted. the Y has Projectors and audio equipment. Although I'm not entirely sure as to why we would need audio equipment.

they got alot of places in fort street mall, but i think alot of places are closed on weekends.
we can check out the area tho and walk around, theres a place called dreamers cafe, its a decent place plate lunch/diner kind of place with a pretty big menu. theres a mexican place in fort street mall thats pretty good, better then any other mexican places i tried so far in hawaii, but they are most likely closed on weekends.

Bad news folks. I won't be able to attend this event. Final Project is due next week, so i need to get a start on the photo essay.

I'll be tagging along with Bulletin Photographers this entire rest of this week, as well as weekend, so i won't be able to be at the YMCA for the meet. Therefore, since there will be no staff on hand, you'd have to pay the rental fee for the board room. which is quite steep. :-( sorry for the late notice.

Sorry you can't make it to the meet but school does come first. Too bad Grant doesn't work for the Y anymore either...might have been able to get him to tag along just to get the room. Oh well...

So in light of this new development, what do you guys want to do? Just do the photo shoot at Foster Botanical Garden and then lunch (and maybe some shooting in downtown) and do the PP Session some other time? Try to find another location to have the PP Session? In my case, my wife will be happier if I'm not out all day.

So what do you guys think? Does anyone know of a place we can use (on real short notice) for the PP Workshop Session on Saturday afternoon?

Or should we just find someplace like Starbucks or a park bench and just use the laptop?

Or should we postpone it for now and maybe do it at the next Meet?

ThanksSorry to hear that, Norris. I hope your back gets better and that you can possibly make the Meet, but don't take any chances.

I hurt my back at work several times (when I was working in Field Operations) and know how bad it can get. When I get back spasms I can't even stand up and have to use a walker or cane to get around the house...going to the bathroom gets real interesting.

I actually yanked my back yesterday morning at home while moving something for my wife. I did go into work and managed to get through the day. This morning it was still sore when I woke up but after moving around a bit it felt a lot better. I'm at work now and there is a dull pain but nothing too bad, just gotta remember to get up from my chair and walk around once in awhile.

Having had to deal with back injuries in the past I kinda know when it's just a sprain or something real bad. Been real lucky so far, I've never hurt my spine or damaged the discs, just had muscle pulls.

Take care of yourself, rest and get better. Hope you can make it to the Meet.

7 of us are planning to show up this Saturday, but that includes Norris. So 6 if his back is still sore and he has to rest.

I can make it next week if we have to postpone. Should we take a tentative head count of those who can make it if we have to postpone?

Since we have 6 confirmed, looks like a good number to keep rolling, I'd suggest to keep it this Saturday. It may be too late for everyone to readjust. We can always do another one later.

Haven't decided yet. I'm debating between the 5D and the Mk3. 5D is probably better suited for the garden but I haven't used it in so long I'll have to mess with it before tomorrow if I want to use it. Other than that I'll have my 70-200, 24-105 and 85. Debating on a flash and I'll probably have my tripod but leave it in the car. My bag will be pretty heavy, but without knowing the area I don't want to leave anything home. Debating on bringing some water. Doesn't show any snack shops or anything in the garden here: http://www.co.honolulu.hi.us/parks/hbg/fbg.htm . I'd assume they have something, but might have to bring something just in case.

Hey guys, long time no see.

For this Saturday I'm a go, I'll be there although I may be a little late. I have to see someone off at the airport. Woohoo! my first meet! :)

As far as gear. I'm very very limited so I'm just bringing the "nifty fifty," and maybe the kit lens (that's all i got) :P. Thinking of getting a lens soon though since I'm going to Maui next weekend :D! Hope to learn a lot of in-the-field tips since I'm not much of a PPer anyway. Hope I don't get lost and I find yall there. Thanks guys! :)

Forgot to mention. When I went to the Wahiawa Botanical Gardens, there was a refreshment stand-like building there, but it wasn't open... even during normal business hours. I'd say bring a snack to be safe if you're a muncher.

It was nice meeting everyone today. It was fun and I'm looking forward to the next meet. Since I wasn't able to make it to the post processing session, I'm posting some of my own here for others to see.

ishida
2nd of August 2008 (Sat), 22:17
First, I start with DPP and make any Brightness, White Balance, and Picture Style Adjustments.

ishida
2nd of August 2008 (Sat), 22:22
Next, I open up my image in Photoshop CS ...no CS3 =[ Since I'm posting the image to the web, I'll assign the sRGB color profile to it.

ishida
2nd of August 2008 (Sat), 22:24
Then I create a Curves adjustment layer. Normally, I find the Enhance Monochromatic Contrast gives the best results about 90% of the time.

ishida
2nd of August 2008 (Sat), 22:26
Next I'll create a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer. I like to adjust the colors individually.

ishida
2nd of August 2008 (Sat), 22:29
Next, I'll apply some sharpening with Unsharp Mask. The values for this image is:

Amount: 151%
Radius: 0.3 pixels
Threshold: 0 levels

This is where I notice the difference in sharpness between my 70-200L and my other lenses. If this were one of my Sigma lenses, the Amount would probably have to be around 250-350%

ishida
2nd of August 2008 (Sat), 22:31
Finally, I'd like to increase the contrast a bit. There are several ways to accomplish this, normally I like to use Unsharp Mask, but in this case I went with another Curves adjustment layer.

ishida

Hey everyone! It was nice to meet you all, even if I didn't really get a chance to chat with you. (And I'll have to meet you next time, Geek). Here's the tutorial on how I did the editing that I showed you guys - the desaturated gritty look - with one of my older pictures. This is kinda the same as the so called "Dave Hill" look, but I don't like making mine seem super "HDR" and super fake looking.
Before:

Anyways, what I do (in Lightroom) is raise the fill light significantly - to the point where it looks washed out. Then I take the blacks and raise them up until it looks how I want it. At this point your colors are going to be extremely saturated, so the next step is to bring the saturation and or vibrance way down to where you want it. I also bump up the contrast, clarity, as well as recovery a bit. As far as curves go, I brighten the lights, especially highlights, and darken the darks and shadows. Lastly, to get the correct color toning, I use the split tone slider. To get that kind of green tone, I selected a yellowish green color for shadows, and bumped up the saturation a bit. Then to bring back the skin coloring I selected a red for highlights, and again brought the saturation up to where I wanted.

If you want to know what my exact settings were for a starting place, they are as follows. Just remember that a lot of this is to taste, so what worked for me might not work for you. Also, when using this method I tend to not make it not quite so extreme, but for the sake of example, I did it here.

White Balance to whatever looks best.
Exposure +0
Recovery 14
Fill Light 77
Blacks 55

Brightness +50
Contrast +64

Presence
Clarity 49
Vibrance -69
Saturation -71

Tone Curve
Highlights +43
Lights +21
Darks -21
Shadows -5

Split Toning
Highlights:
Hue 0
Saturation 7
Balance 0
Shadows:
Hue 73
Saturation 12

I didn't sharpen this one, but you can sharpen to taste.

Enjoy.
