I had always believed that you need a CPL for AF camera's and a PL for MF camera's, now i recently read somewhere that it also depends if the front element rotates or not - is this correct ?
thanks,
Nick.

However, a lens with a rotating front element will make using a polarizing filter quite a pain in the you-know-where because you need to rotate the filter to a particular position to optimize the effect. Then, if the camera decides to change the focus, you have to re-adjust the filter. Rotating the filter will tend to upset the focus. It's potentially a never-ending battle.
Cameras with autoexposure and autofocus systems may have problems with a "linear" polarizing filter which is why "circular" polarizing filters were invented. Both types need to be rotated to choose the desired amount of polarizing effect.
