Looks like the Strategy is:
XS replaces the XT
XSi replaces the XTi
40D replaces the 30D
HOLE GOES RIGHT HERE FOR THE 5D model
hmmmmmmm:confused:

As I understand it the XS/1000D represents a brand new tier that precedes the XSi/450D, so really it would be 'lower' than the XT/350D. Other than that - the words hit, nail, and head seem to fit together!

The numbering scheme supports your comment. But what I can't figure out is ...how long is the venerated XT going to be around. Don't get me wrong...it's a great camera. I love mine although modded. I also love my sons and it is unmodded. It takes great pictures. But I suppose if Canon can let the 5D go this long in the face of a lot of change in the industry the XT will be here for a very, very long time.
Still hopefull.

If you're referring to its availability (considering it's a discontinued model), then I imagine it'll stay around until stocks deplete, much like any previous models. I was the proud owner of an XT/350D too, before it met its unfortunate fate, and it served me well (and beyond my expectations) - nobody should be under the assumption that just because it is 'old' tech that it is useless! Much like everything else, there will always be something that little bit better.
As for the 5D, I have every confidence that Canon knows what it is doing. I believe that the only vaguely credible thing we can rely on is the pattern of time Canon have used in the past between releasing models. I'm by no means an expert by any length of the imagination, but it just seems to me that too many people think the new '?D' will be released as a reactive measure in light of the competition.
Either way, I'm saving my pennies!

Canon is not scared, they've made 5D technology.... 3 something years ago? nikon has just did it a couple weeks ago. Also, canon is not worried about their customers jumping boat, we all know they're going to release something monstrously kickbutt awesomeness.
It's just that with all the recent news from nikon we expect canon to have some news too, but unfortunately, none. yet.
my guess, 2 new bodies, 3D and 6D, probably. new 100-400, hopefully 24-70 F/2.8 IS, and maybe something else fancy.
waiting, and waiting... and once its announced, im ordering one.....
back to the first thing i mentioned, Canon has taken the title of "best full frame" (and for the price) for so many years, they wouldnt let nikon take it in a snap. haha. that would be crazy.

I, too, am anxious for the 5D replacement.
I've shot 35mm film for 35 years (Gawd, has it been that long?!) and when I shoot the APS-C sensor I feel ripped off!
I WANT MY FULL FRAME BACK, AND I WANT IT NOW!!!

You can get it now. Just get off the PC and go buy a 5D. That's Canon's answer to you wanting FF.

That answer is not really cutting it, and you know that.. ;)

Not sure where the elusive Next Gen 5D talk came from, but I was hoping to talk XS.
I was not overly impressed with the previews, just a slightly raised bar from the very old XT models. I remember when I first saw the model name in DPReviews, I was excited. Then, as I kept reading, beeeeh, not as excited.
Hopefully Canon chose the right set of features to throw together into one device. Anxious to hear from the first XS owners here in the forums. :)

I'd argue it's not as black and white as that. When the XSi was first announced, its relatively rich feature set certainly lifted my eyebrow. But after the XS's announcement, it became evidently clear that Canon intended to split the Rebel scene into two separate lines, with the XS replacing the old XTi (so Canon could immediately discontinue the XTi - with anyone intending to purchase a new XTi rather than the newly released XSi now forced to purchase a XS), while the XSi represents something more along the lines of an intermediary between the old XTi and the 40D.
So in conclusion, the XSi is obviously a successor to the XTi, but it doesn't exactly replace it either.

Just when i got the hang of the XTI now i hear that they are not going to make it anymore. In some online places itīs allready backordered o just donīt carry them anymore. I was planning on getting anotherone by the end of this year. Before buying a XSI iīll rather buy the XTI the live view thing i wonīt use. If i would buy another rebel it would be the next generation of rebel not the XSI.

I love my XTI, my friendh has a XSI, seriously i think the XSI is more of a toy and the XTI is more realish if you know what im saying. I hope Canon will announce a 50D early 09, ill get it.
