I have Canon A40 with fresh NiMh batteries (1600mAh)

I've tested their charge: I was able to make more then 300 shots with LCD on, and using flash (64mb card)
But sometimes, after full charge, I made several shots, then 2-3 days my camera stayed at home, then I made few shots and it reports "Change batteries".

So, it looks like batteries depleted inside camera without any camera usage, or camera makes wrong report of the batteries state.

Any ideas? Similar cases?

I'm using the same Batteries in my A40. Panasonics. I am nothing short of totaly impressed with how long they last even when not being used. However, batteries do lose their charge when not in use.
I've had my camera since July and am still using the same alkaline batteries as backup that came with the camera.

Yup, batteries do lose its charge if not in use. NiMH and NiCD batteries are the worst one, they can lose their charge in matter of days. Lithium ion is better, they can retain their charges for years, but still losing their charges anyway.
