My G5 finally gave in after many years excellent service, so took the plunge and upgraded to a G9. I also have a EOS350D, it produces excellent results, but it is bulky so I like to use my G compact cameras as a walk around camera.

The G9 is a very good upgrade from a G5, and I must say despite reservations I haven't really missed the swivel screen. The G9's screen is awesome.

Image quality is pretty good too. I have not encountered any of the CA problems that blighted the G5.

Build quality is on a par with the G5 - which is in my opinion the highest praise I can give it. You could hammer in nails with the G5!

The only downside is that I must say that low light image quality is not as good as the G5 which has the sweetest F2 lens. This is a disappointment, perhaps I haven't got to grips with IS yet! A G9 with an F2 lens would be too much to ask for, if the next one in the series (G11) has an F2 lens I will buy it in a heartbeat.

Here are some samples :-

I have a G5 and a G9 also.... cant seem to let go of the very near mint G5 quite yet. Seems to be a great backup although I have several Elph backups if I had an emergency. The G5 is still a darned nice camera, though I have heard G3 was better image quality wise.

Nice images!! I made about the same change you did, only I moved from a G3...same as G5 only 4 MPX. The difference was that my G3 was still in perfect condition. There are some trade off points, but over all I have no regrets. The faster lens of the G3/5/6 was nice, but I do think the IS goes a long way towards offsetting that in order to put it in a smaller package. The high iso noise is an issue, but I look at it as an option I didn't have at all before, and I'm not shooting for publication so I can live with it. I rarely shoot higher than iso 100 anyway, and did the same with the G3. Anti noise software helps, and some of the prints I've made really didn't show it at all. Now, if they could make a G9 with a slr sized sensor, and "L" glass lens, faster of course, and keep it in the same sized package, while still utilizing all the accessories I've already bought for the the G9,...oops, sorry, dreaming again!:)

..and make the lens a 10-1000mm equivalent.

The rumors are starting to get a bit more credible in terms of the G10 and it being introduced around Photokina time:

http://www.canonrumours.com/ (scroll down the page a bit)

Here is what was posted:

Canon PowerShot G10 coming in September.
Here's a spec list of the upcoming G10 I was just sent.

Resolution: 14mp (why?)
LCD: 3" VGA
Video: HD (720p)
Proc: DIGIC III
Lens: 28-220 (8x)
Card: SD
ISO: 80-1600 (Improved)
VF: More accurate viewfinder
Feature: Highlight Tone Priority
Feature: Lighter
Feature: New Battery (Higher Capacity)
Flash Shoe: Yes
Price: $499 USD

I also see that the G9 is down to $429 at Circuit City when ordered online for in-store pickup (take another 8% off if you have access to the AAA coupon). I wonder if this is an indication they are trying to clear out stock because the new one is coming.
