Ok so my P&S ALWAYS went where i did, regardless of where that was, including the beach..Now that I now have ventured into the DSLR world, I SLEEP WITH THE CAMERA!!!:D However, is it safe to take it to the beach??? I'm guessing NO, but maybe some do and can share some tips on how to keep it safe...

I don't think I'd be keen on changing lenses too much at the beach because of the possibility of wind blown sand getting into the body. But take a few common sense precautions and I'd be happy enough. No real reason not to unless you're paranoid. It's just a camera after all!

cheers

It must be summer in the Northern Hemisphere again, and it appears the evil sand monsters are coming out of hibernation and getting ready to attack DSLRs at the beach.

You wouldn't think it was summer if you were over here Moppie. It's done nothing but rain so far...

We shoot quite a few events on the beach...

I never change lenses out there or set one down-- a backup body comes in handy.

And never a problem--knock on wood.:)

That's alright, it's raining here to, and has been all week.

I might take my camera out in it, let it wash off all the sand from going to beach in the summer

No reason to leave your DSLR behind when you visit the beach...just use some reasonable care and both you and your camera will be fine!

If you say you sleep with it, you must look after it. Just take extra care if it's windy. You do get some days that are still but I wouldn't go changing the lenses if the wind is blowing But I'm sure you will look after it.

I take by SLR to the beach all the time. I do take a bit more care to avoid salt spray and sand, but thats about it. These are the things I do when at the beach.
Change lenses only in a sheltered location. The car is a good place.
I keep all my equipment in a Ziploc bags, lenses and all. Just a safeguard against sand.
When beach combing, I keep the lens cap on. Depending on the wind direction and the wave height, there can be a significant amount of saltwater spray from the breakers. The lens cap will keep the lens haze free.
I wipe down the camera when I get home with a dampened cloth and vacuum out my bad.

Thats about it. I been doing this for years and have never had any breakage due to beach conditions. So take your camera and enjoy.
