There is a tool there for our use. . . why not use it? Remember the initial problem with film, you have to wait for developing to check your shots.

I chimp, and I don't have a problem with it.
I saw some serious chimping yesterday, clearly a Pro with a 1d taking a photo of a building in the city. She had either an assitant, or director, or someone else with her, she would take a shot, then they would take turns looking.

I don't chimp.
Since I know my equipment and how to use it, and I am after wildlife which is shoot or lose anyway, I can't take the time to look at each shot. I trust my training, the equipment and lady luck. It usually works out 90% of the time.
Now, I have been know to ape . . .

I do chimp, but usually during a pause in the action. Nothing wrong with quickly flipping though and deleting shots which are obviously all wrong.
If you didn't chimp, you might as well use film. :)

Yep, I chimp.:o
Depending on where I am. Track or court side, no. I wait until I'm away from the action and in a safe place, then I will sort through the shots. I learned this watching someone else get injured for not paying attention, fortunately it was not serious.
Family, vacation, landscape or still life, just about 100%.

I chimp, especially when I'm shooting on assignment, histogram for one, also I'd like to see I got "THE SHOT", then I can move on to try different techniques and different style of shooting. Otherwise I'll keep chimping until I'm happy with it :p ... of course, based on not to miss any actions.

I glance at the LCD to check the histogram maybe about 60% of the time. Every once in a while when I have a little time available I'll go through and review the shots I have, but lately it's getting more and more rare for me to do that.

Today I did an entire morning without even glancing at my histogram
I feel like I have achieved something here
OK, took under 100 shots but still.
Best think is I knew the exposure would be right because I know my camera and the lighting was also very good - it didn't even occur to me to have a chimp.
so today, my oook is reduced just a little

Hmmm. I don't. Should I?
Main reason is that the LCD is too small anyway to judge whether a shot is good or not. I have even turned off the review on my 20D.
My 2 year old son, however, does it for the two of us. Whenever I shoot a photo of him and his brother (6 months), he comes over to me and demands to see the photograph
So maybe I'm a forced chimper ...

I consider chipping very important, for a number of reasons.
1. I do it :) and I don't do dumb things
2. enables me to check the histogram, makeing sure that I don't over/under exposure.
3. the pros do it, so if I wont to be a pro I need to do the same things they do
4. it enables me to see how skills are coming along with framing etc.

I didn't pay $1500+ to pretend I don't need to check images. Its not a negative action, its a tool. Did you ever buy a hammer to just store in the basement and pretend you never need it? Pointless. I like to check the composition, the histogram, and other information. My job is to get the shot and be sure I do before I leave. If I wanted to wait until I got home I might as well have stayed with film and the lightbox. I prefer not to be a Luddite and will take whatever technology offers. Three cheers for chimping! And God bless the guy who invented it.

Histogram checking at the beginning of a burst, practically never for composition (what can you tell on that dinky screen, anyhow?), but maybe sometimes after the shooting's done to let someone else have a look pre-processing.
intechpcx

Absolutely I do it. Mostly because I am very much the amateur and I do it to check my technique. When shooting sports, usually my kids games, I do wait until there's a break in the action (time-out, end of period, etc) so as not to miss a shot. I don't however delete any pictures when I do it. One lesson I learned using a point-and-shoot digital years ago is that a shot that looks uninspired on the LCD may be hiding something that only appears when you see it full size.

And God bless the guy who invented it.I dont really chimp ever at all anymore . . i find it slows me down and kills my battery like nothing else . . i either got the shot or i didnt . . the moment has passed . .
that being said . . let me give a solid "WORD UP" to Barb42 for this response . .
there are occaisions when i do . . . only on a shoot for a client . . . the rules change then . . . when im after a precise list of shots that have to be "just so" according to the art director . . .
on a shoot my goal is basically this . . to get the shot in as few takes as possible . . its a production thing . . time is money and money is important if your shooting for it . . when you have 10-15 people gathered together in a collaborative effort and you're already looking at a 8-10 hour schedule . . you want to do your thing and get out . . cuz chances are there are other people who will put you behind schedule anyway (late models, fussy hairdressers, makeup ****s, broken sets, etc) . . . and the only way to make up time is shoot time . .
so in those situations . . chimp on my people . . . CHIMP ON :D

I have developed a method of turning my head 90° to the right and thereby being able to Chimp the last shot while simultaneously taking another - so it evolves into a constant chimping session.
I also keep in trim by peeking into keyholes during non-shooting times.
Any more brilliant threads I can contribute to?

Yeah I usually do. Actually... if I remember right some definitions that chimping is looking on your lcd and letting out some weird mumbling noises, then I don't :)
But I do check (as rest of 90% accoring to this poll) before (or in between) race for exposure and rest of stuff since I usually don't dare to come back with too dark or too bright photos. But I don't check for every single photo I shoot. In sports I'm shooting it's too late anyway. You have shot or you don't have it, since usually there's no another chance when you have only one run :)

ya know . . i think the interpretation of chimping (here and even as told in the movie clip on sports shooter) is a bit osbcure . . .
is it the showing to someone else (sharing of recent shots - noises optional) or is it the mere checking every 10-20 shots or so?
i dont think looking after a shoot at the shots you took qualifies . . .

Some people insist its the other way around Epeace.. in fact most people try to argue that checking histograms is NOT chimping.. and it's just the reviewing so you can "ohh and ahh" over your photos that is "Chimping"

Of course you chimp, or at least you should chimp. Well sort of anyway. Unless your a seasoned pro, cockey, etc. As for looking at the pics. well the LCD isn't going to tell the story. The histogram is. I love the combo of a thumbnail type pic and the histogram on the same post-view screen. Personally I'm not good enough to not check the histogram. Maybe one of these days. Maybe one day I can call someone a snot-nosed chimping punk. Till then I will keep wiping my nose and chimping away... (just kidding by the way I would never call anyone a name or degrade their skills)

I do a lot of chimping during setup and taking test shots. Once I'm shooting, I turn the lcd off. When I'm through I'll review them if I dont have my laptop with me. There has been a couple of occasions where I ran out of memory, and had to cull the cards on the spot. I was very uneasy about deleting images before viewing them on screen.

Banana? http://members.bellatlantic.net/~vze2hdzu/pics/banana.gifhttp://members.bellatlantic.net/~vze2hdzu/pics/banana.gifah yes thats it precisely . . . its the "ooh-aah" factor that determines chimpness of your review (IMHO) . . . . thanks for clarifying (even if you were being sarcastic) :D . .
for those that deem legitimate review chimping as well . . you need only go all manual (if you havent already) to acheive full soul shooter status . . . . . . . . . you can then climb to the highest mountain and meditate on the righteous ways of renouncing all technological assistance . . . pack light . . all you'll need is your canonflex and a roll of velvia . . . . . and $15 for the mule . . . . .

I do chimp to check the histogram every so often. I also do review the images every so often to do things like, checking for closed eyes in groups and other importaint shots and to see if I'm getting the action in the candids that I want. I delete the shots that don't work to cut down on the editing time back in the studio. The object in shooting digital for me was in part for that reason.
When I shoot in the studio, I do review the images every so often with the clients to get thier feedback on how they are feeling about the shoot. I build relationships with clients and in reviewing the shots durring the shoot I think it helps, especially when it comes to engagement sessions. The clients get to see how the slight changes we make affect the look of the image. I also don't have to worry about non-billable retakes. In the past 2 1/2 years, I have only had 1 retake for a corporate client that was billable as she ok'd the original shots at the end of the session.
Checking the images on the camera is basically like shooting a polaroid back in the old days, but it's a whole lot faster and cheaper.

Of course! It is part of the capturing process and an excellent 'quick reference'. For a $50.00-$100.00 shot I'd be a damn fool not to. Just don't understand why people treat the subject as something to be shy/embarassed about.
When I take a break for coffee, I'll sit there and thumb through stuff just for the fun of it.
I also blow my nose in public (with kleenex in hand) and my wife has a shot of me scratching my butt. Politically correct is a VERY foreign term to me.
Remember, I'm a maverick anyway, in that I shoot naked horses and the pretty girls that ride them.
