I finally broke down and purchased one of these things. Not sure if I like it, yet. I'm having a lot of trouble squeezing the shutter release halfway-it seems likes it's out of focus or I'm taking a picture! Is it just stiff because its new or could it be a problem with the grip? Anyone have any ideas or experiences?

I have a grip for my XTi and 40D and the buttons on both feel similar to the actual buttons on the camera. Exchange it for a different one?

I've got 2 bg-e2's (bg-e2 and a bg-e2n)... both felt exactly like the camera from new. Just out of curiosity... you arene't hitting the af focus point shift button when shooting in the gripped position are you? Sorry to ask, but the handhold is quite abit different and takes just a bit of getting used to in portrait orientation. Pretty easy to do and I do believe it may possible do something strange if you hold that button and push the shutter. I'll have to go look and find out... but I'd look into your grip (literally...your hands) and make sure your shooting clear of those buttons before you send it back. Just my 2 pennies...

Canon or third party grip? The feel of the third party grips somtimes isn't the same as the Canons. The BG-E2n I bought with my 40D feels just like the shutter buttons on the camera.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. Its a Canon grip and I've had a little more time to work with it since I first posted. It seems like it requires too much pressure to activate the focus. It can be done, but only very slowly and with infinite care. Usually, I'll squeeze as gently as I can, and then, wham-I've taken an out-of-focus picture. I did check my hand position-thanks for the suggestion, jrsamples-but I think I've ruled that out. I'm calling Amazon in the morning and getting a new one. I'm back to holding the camera body for vertical shots, so this one's gotta go!
