Hello. I have been struggling with the problem of trying to take photographs that reveal the texture and colour of leaves and branches, often against the sky. Can anyone recommend a practice e.g. large or small focal, set exposure to trunk as opposed to x, timing, etc.
Go figure, it would seem as though my eyes are better than my g2... Thank you in advance for suggestions.

Why don't you take one of your shots and take a minute to describe it. That might be easier for us to respond, as we'd have a better sense of your objective, environment, and your own appraisal of where the selected shot fell short of expectations.
I can say that I am stuggling too !
My instincts that the challenges are similar to 35mmm SLR photography, namely finding thesky-leaf exposure balance. I would add that depending on your dream, back lighting can be helpful too. I suspect that e-comp controls may give digital some added flexibility.

Hello. I am standing at the base of a single tree with a wide-angle looking skywards. When I try to take-in the
colour of the leaves (even a slight suggestion) too much light is emitted. The opposite problem results in a dark shadow superimposed on a blue sky. My hope was too capture the texture of the trunk as well as the colour of the leaves. I am guessing that my f-stop shouldn't matter, however, I am new to photography. Likewise, maybe time of day is an issue. Again, maybe what I am looking to capture requires a longer focal length or a filter? Needless to say I am having fun learning... Thank you, gain.

Many thanks. There are some very good ideas here, amongst others, to always keep in mind where the eye is going. If I am successful this fall, I will be certain to share a pick.
