Hi All,
I'm having a weird problem with my EOS 1DS. I was shooting some portraits and noticed
that the faces appeared to be elongated. I thought it was me going crazy. I did another shoot of four people. I had to produce a horizontal photo and a vertical photo of the group for newspaper usage. In the horizontal mode the photos are fine. When I re-positioned the group for my vertical shots, the elongated problem appeared again (I noticed this after I downloaded the images to my computer) Towards the end of the series of verticals the problem seemed to correct itself and all was well. Has anyone experienced this bizarre camera behavior? When I called Canon Repair in Irvine, California they said they have never heard of this problem but are quite interested in seeing the camera. It will mean that I will lose my camera for about 14 days. Not pleasant. Any ideas? I was using a 2.8 70-200 Canon Zoom lens.

Do you see the elongated faces only on your computer-screen or also on paper?
If you see it only on the screen, try creating a perfect square in PS or something on the screen such as 500x500 pixels, then take a (physical) ruler and measure it. If the dimensions are different, try adjusting your screen so that the square is square, then check again your pictures.

Hope that helps...

Another thought : but I don't know enough about optical physics to confirm. Perhaps one of the lenses in the lens-group of the lens isn't in its real position anymore and therefore distorts the pic...

Thank you for the quick response. Yes I see it on paper. I print using a Fujix Pictrography 3500.

Craig:
If you're using Photoshop, go under the Image menu, select Pixel Aspect Ratio, and make sure 'Square' is checked.

That's a longshot.

Thank you for responding! I'm using Photoshop 7. I don't see that under the Image menu. At first I thought it was my printer. I created a new document with squares, circles and ovals. All printed as they are supposed to. Hmmm. I went back to the flash card that contained the original portraits and viewed the images using the LCD on the back of the camera. I can see the elongated images on the camera's LCD. If someone told me that they were having this problem, I would tell them to cut back on their use of magic mushrooms. As I don't do that anymore I am perplexed by this problem. As per Ikinaa's suggestion, I'll see if the problem is in the lens.

Hey, could be a flash back...

Still perplexed...but now laughing. Thanks

I would be looking towards a software problem as well.. but you never know. It would certainly be odd if this was the camera itself.
