I have a couple old, cheap tripods that I wouldn't even consider putting my 10D and 100-400 lens on ... I really doubt they could hold the weight.

Not having a clue what to look for in a tripod, I've been doing a lot of research from the number of posts here on what tripods are good and finally, after a few weeks of searching, I recieved my new tripod yesterday.

I bought the Manfrotto 3221WN Wilderness tripod and the Manfrotto 3047 3 way pan head. (actually, it's my Christmas present from my wife :)

I've only set it up in the house so far but this thing is made with very good quality and very sturdy (my wife says it's nice but she will not allow me to leave it set up as a piece of furniture/art work)

I can't believe how tall this thing is when set up! I may have to get a stool to stand on to use it when it's at its max height.

Anyway ... That's one of the great things about belonging to a forum with such knowledgable people, and for that ... Thanks!

Lol.. .I bought a $20 tripod from bestbuy. I'm considering returning it, because I'm not so certain I'd trust it to hold my 300D. However, I don't have $100+ to spend on a tripod. Thoughts?

Maybe it's because I'm 'getting' older but my outlook now is rather than buying something and saving a few dollars, I save the few dollars and buy something worth the money when I have the money. I don't have endless resources to spend on my hobby but I know when I get something I want it with good quality so I don't have to spend more money later to replace something that I should have bought in the first place. The progression of my photography made me decide when I "need" to upgrade and next on the list was a GOOD tripod.

As I mentioned, my 2 other tripods are crap and cost next to nothing. They also never made me feel secure, even with my cheap 35mm camera (Cosmerex or what I called my Commie camera) from years back. (I only use those tripods for light stands now)

I consider this an investment, now and I know this tripod will last a very long time.

Johneo,. excellent point.

It seems to me ,. that is life in general,. and especially in areas where we are concerned with quality... if we decide to take the cheap way out.. we allways replace it. Thus it ends up costing more in the long run... every time.

I wouldn't trust my 10D on a $20 tripod. I ended up buying one today for $175 shipped. but it will give me piece of mind that i won't drop my camera and/or brake any of my lenses.

Good point to all. Thanks! I'm returning this thing now :) I hear you can get a decent tripod for about $50? Is that true?
