Hi,
I normally shoot 2 30D's, but I picked up a G9 to take underwater with my when I leave for Australia tomorrow and I have a couple questions. I took it on a test dive yesterday and was fairly impressed with it, but:
1. everytime the camera is turned off, it reverts back to eval metering. I would like it to stay on spot metering all the time? Possible?
2. It also reverts back to single shot when turned off... do I really have to put it back on continuous everytime?
3. On my 30D's, I'm used to using AI Servo for moving subjects. Best I can tell so far, the G9 doesn't have this AF function, correct?
Thanks!

Not sure about the third, but for the first two, you can set those up the way you want in P (or Av, Tv, M, etc.) mode, and then hit the MENU button and scroll to the last item on the first menu: Save Settings (Fastest way is to hit MENU, then scroll UP once, it'll bring you right to it). Then you can save those settings to C1 or C2, which you can then get to from the top dial.
You have to be careful, though, as it'll save MOST of the current settings of whatever mode you're in when you do the setup, to include current zoom, etc. If you're choosing your settings in M, it'll save your current exposure settings as well (which you probably wouldn't want it to do). So, basically, do the setup in whatever mode you would want to be shooting in, and then save it to C1 or C2 in that configuration.
Hope that helps.
EDIT: I just realized a more concise way to say it:
C1 and C2, once saved, will behave the same as whatever mode you were in when you did the setup, with the addition of whatever changes you made.

Yeah, that makes sense, and it might work. I shoot mostly in manual mode because thats what I'm used to shooting it on my 30's. Thanks. Anyone know about AI Servo AF on the G9? It's looking like it's not there.

I was not familiar with the AI Servo AF, so I had to Google it. The G9 does not have the capabilities described in this link;

Thanks Dennis. That would have been a nice little feature on the G9, but not surprising that it doesn't have it. Oh well.

Daniel,
We all want MORE in the G9, but the laws of physics keeps getting in the way, according to the more learned on this forum. I often read "wish lists" on this and other forums on what the "G10" should (or will) possess when it is released (soon?). This sounds like something to add to the list(s).

There are several different focus modes on the G9 including "AiAF"; however, AiAf does not track as does the Ai Servo on Canon DSLR cameras. Check http://lightdescription.blogspot.com/2008/05/g9-focus-on-focusing.html for some examples.

Correct... AiAf is not the same thing, but it could work similarly in some situations. However, with your subject moving toward/away from you, AiAf really isn't much use. Oh well... It's still a great little camera to take with me underwater and to carry when I don't want/need one of my slrs.

You can set it to the metering you want along with all the other settings, then save them to one of the memory mode settings (C1-C2). Then, set the camera to that mode. When it powers off, it will come back up in that mode with the settings you saved.

Yep... thats what Junior's said in the very first reply ;) Thanks though. That might work for me.
