Ok so I just started shooting in RAW w/ my G9 and I wanted to edit them on Photoshop CS3 but a pop up saying "could not complete request because it is not the right kind of document" so with that am I missing something??? Thanks in advance.

photoshop cannot open raw files directly. you have to use adobe raw which comes with it.

try and use adobe bridge (again should come with cs3) to browse the file and double click it. it'll open up adobe raw automatically. then save it as tiff or jpg to open in photoshop for more edits

or download trial copy of lightroom which is really good too!!!

Go to the Adobe website and download Adobe Camera Raw 4.1, I beleive is the latest. Its a plug-in for reading raw. Follow the instruction for installing on Adobe CS3. Thats all you need.

Another option (especially if you have an older Photoshop version) is to convert the RAW image to DNG. You can download the converter here

http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=3894

DNG works just as well and is future proof since it converts a proprietory RAW format into an Open format. The problem with RAW is that there are many different RAW versions and the tools to correctly decipher the image could become obsolete in a few years ... this way you know that your pictures will be OK even 50 years from now.

Is Raw format only able to be post processed in CS3 or will CS2 work with the plug in? would be interested in knowing as I might be purchasing a G9 soon!

You have to be careful with CS2. The new ACR will not work in CS2. You probably should convert to DNG and then it should work. If your not sure, let me know, I will test it for you...I have both versions on 2 Mac's....shooter

ACR? im unfamiliar with that, ive used plenty of DSLRS and 35mm SLRS, only canon too so im familar with adobe bridge. Newest camera I had was a 20d. I run an IBM and CS2 with raw plug in for 20d. I plan to purchase G9 very soon as I love the results i have seen and all the controls it features put it right there with almost any DSLR. Could i shoot RAW with the G9 and open the photos through Bridge and then have issues opening in CS2? just trying to work out the kinks before the purchase.

Thanks,

Andrew

20d will open fine with CS 2 upwards but G9, if they're like the latest canons, will not open in CS2 and you will need CS3 or canon's own software to be able to open it. (we're talking about CR2 format here, not jpg)

Lightroom can do it. Even Canon's own DPP can't handle it!

i guess i need to start looking around for cs3 or purchase, how much is the whole cs3 suite? that would be the most effecient.

unless you're a power user of photoshop or have the money, i would say look into getting lightroom instead. i've hardly used cs3 since using lightroom. for photo work - it's excellent! and it's cheaper. go try out the trial before you think about purchasing! that's what i did.

I personally just use the software Canon gave me with my G9 to make them 16bit .TIFFs

Agreed on Lightroom. I use it all the time because the interface is more convenient then CS3. I'm told that soon, in a new release, actions will work in LR. Can't wait...shooter
