I've been looking at Sigmas 50-500mm($980) and Canon 100-400mm($1400) to replace my 75-300mm IS was wondering if the $400 usd worth the difference between the 2 lens. I've not really on a budget but i could put the $400 towards another len(s).

I can't speak for the Sigma glass but the 100 - 400 that I have is FANTASTIC. I was thinking about a less expensive chunk of glass when I ordered it but I'm glad I went the way I did.

you might want to check the difference of the AF between the two. Depending on what you are going to do with the lens that may help your decision.

here is a link to the review page at Fred Miranda, you should be able to get more opinions there.

Don't know anything about the Sigma lens but I own the Canon 100-400 IS and think it's worth every bit of the price I paid for it. Without a doubt my favorite lens.

The link below is my first real outing with the lens and a big reason I bought it (not the photos of the pilots and crew). Some of those shots I've printed to 8x10 and larger and none of them were edited except for cropping and resizing. Makes even an amature like me feel, well ... special!

The only thing I've seen that the Sigma does better is have a zoom lock function - prevents 'zoom creep' when the lens is pointed up or down...

Its also about £400 cheaper I think

I do not know a lot about the Sigma, except that it gets good reviews from several folks. The thing they don't mention is its size and weight. Also it does not have the IS that I find invaluable to my shooting wildlife on the go, handheld. By the time I get set up with tripid cable release etc. many of the pictures dissapear. Now if you are setting in a blind all nice and warm waiting for the critters to come to you, then setting up the tripod is no big deal. But overall, I find the 100-400 L IS to be my most used lens. I shoot wildlife, including birds in flight and otherwise, something over there. the 100-400 ease of handling and IS makes for a lot more shoots that are good than befor I was using the lens. I have ,and had befor IS, the 300-2.8 L with canon extenders to use when I set up for looong shots on the tripod. It is a great lens, I would not part with it, but even by itself when trying to handhold, the gain in steadiness I get with the IS keeps the 100-400 L IS on the camera most often. FWIW Chuck

I have no trouble with zoom creep, the 100-400 has a continuosly adjustable zoom friction feature. It can be set anywhere between very loose to it aint going to budge. And that can be set at any zoom focal length.
