Hi, This is my first post so please be patient.... I have a canon 10D with a canon 24-70L 2.8 lens, lens hood as supplied with lens. When using the pop-up flash a dark shaddow is cast on the bottom of the photo. I have attempted to alter the lens hood to no avail. When the lens hood is removed the shadow is removed.
Any help or pointers will be greatly received.
Kind regards.

canon recognized that the pop-up flash in the 10d was too low and when they made the 20d they raised it.
that said, you cant help it... only way to fix this is by getting a external shoe mount flash (ie 420 550 ir 580ex) and your problems will disapear

Or, if using flash, remove the hood. Easy. :)

Even with the raised built-in flash on the 20D, you can't take flash pictures using all the lenses with the hoods on -- some you have to remove the hoods.

Yea The simplest and cheapest solution is to jst remove the hood when using the flash, unless there are a lot of orther bright lights around the hood isn't really nessecary. But It couldn't hurt to have a shoe mount flash, there much better IMHO.

You have a good camera. You have an excellent lens. My conclusion: you want to shoot very good pictures. Therefore you don't want to use the built-in flash because the results would be equal to P&S pictures.
What you need is an external flash for more power and flexibility, e.g. bouncing. Then the hood isn't an issue anymore.

Replace 10D with 20D if you don't want to shell out some cash to buy a 550ex flash.

Replacing 10D with 20D doesn't solve the problem. I have the same problem with 20D and Sigma 18-50/2.8. By removing the hood you get some help to it.

When I used my 10D and the 24-70 even without the lens hood I still got the shadow at the widest focal length. There is nothing you can do about this short of getting a flash or a lens that is not quite so long.

I noticed this with my Drebel, and the built-in flash on it flips up higher than the one on the 10D. The shadowing is a function of the length and diameter of the 24-70 L, and there is nothing you can do about it with that combo.
Have Fun,

Since everyone has stated the obvious solutions (ie buy more/different stuff) which is THE solution as long as you plan to use the gear. On the otherhand there are some one time solutions if you want to get a shot and don't have the shoe mount flash or like in my case more often than not, letf it somewhere else. Such as the business card trick of redirecting the flash to get a bounce effect. I've done this with my P&S cams and have gotten pretty good at impromptu situations. Simply angle a white biz card in front of the flashead to redirect it to another bounce surface. I've heard a couple other tricks, but they all pretty much do the same. That will get you by in a pinch, but I have to agree with the ultimate solution being "buy more stuff". With the prices as they are $125 for 420EX, its a worthwhile investment.
Cheers...
