I haven't owned a point & shoot camera for quite some time, and am looking at the G9 as a replacement for my Rebel XT.
I'm hoping the lens is somehwhat decent, and made of glass?

Useless. It doesn't answer the question.

very unscientific test here, but i've tapped the lens before and it feels like glass to me where the barrel is definitely plastic. cuts down on weight i guess... :)

the lens is good for a P & S. why does it matter if it's glass or plastic again by they way?

Useless. It doesn't answer the question.
I guess I was too vague, in most, if not all, reviews there never was any mention of the lens' composition makeup, just its abilities. It certainly appears to be glass but who knows what those wily Canon technicians are up to? I'm with cricketboy...who cares? And I don't mean that to be a slight to Marc who posed the question. It seems the analysts who kick these cameras around could care less too.

actually, was trying to be disrespectful to the OP and i didn't really mean 'who cares'? i actually meant - why is it important if the lens is glass or plastic if it serves its purpose. in fact, since you don't ever touch the lens, if the IQ is good, plastic would be good since we don't ever touch the lens IMO.

Steve's says it's glass, all glass.

I've looked in the manual, the technical paper and the product line brochure - none of which say whether it's glass or plastic. I can't imagine it not being glass, however.
Steve's seems pretty sure though, saying "The G9 features a 6X optical (35-210mm in the 35mm format) f/2.8-4.8 all-glass aspherical zoom lens."
