Hey all. Urban is a genre I struggle to 'see' when I'm out with the camera. However, I was recently in Bristol and consciously made an effort to get some shots - please tell me what you think...

hey Mark :) I'm not an urban shooter so my comments may not be relevant...but I like the shots. #3 is my favorite (portrait shot of the mall). I might suggest some desaturated or gritty processing for a grittier look (more urbanesque style).

Hey Mark :D I am drawn to 1, 3 and 4.

on 1 I might crop in tighter from the top so that the frame is all bags. Also maybe deepen the red and yellow.

on 2 I like Lisa's suggestion :)

On 3 I would straighten it a bit and bump the contrast.

All in all, great job! :D :D

I never really know how best to process my shots. I don't have a lot of time available for a lot of processing and I have a tendency to try things and end up junking what I've done as I think it looks worse. I may have a go over the next few days and see what I can come up with.

Thanks Terri. Great suggestions. I'll try those (mind you - I did have a go at straightening #3 already - I obviously need to try harder to find a horizontal line to measure :o

Mark, I've seen #1 in some of the games and really liked it the first time I saw it. #4 is also appealing to my eye. My only nit would be more even lighting, it drops off on the right of #1 and in the front on #4, however; I'm afraid you would need more lighting sources than what you would have traveling through. Composition and subject is what really attracted me to these two.

Urban is not my forte either, but; I think you made a very good effort. If this is an area you want to explore more, I hope those who favor urban will give some pointers on what to train your eye toward.

Great urban set Mark. Looks like you got caught in the third one....woman appears to be pulling the little girl along :lol:...unless it's your family.

I like the first one most and wonder what it would look like in B&W.

Bobert, That is indeed my family - I think the thought is "Oh - he's not stopping to take more photo's is he?" ;):lol::lol:

James, I got this many shots in the post because I did not attach them. I host my files on my website but others use services such as Smugmug, Photobucket, Flickr, etc and link from there. By linking using the button above the message box that looks like a sun above two mountains, you can have up to 8 pictures per post (unfortunately, that also includes smilies :(;)

It's a good set, Mark. I like #1 best and I think it is great in color rather than black and white, What are those anyway, laundry bags? #2, the clock is a bit too central, I would like to see it pushed to the left or right side, with more people in view. #3 I like because you caught interesting facial expressions. Hey don't they frown on photography in malls over there?

The shot in the arcade is spoilt by the people looking down the barrel as you've shot.

Thanks, Pio. Yes, they are laundry bags in #1 - they were in the car park of the hotel we stayed in. Thanks for your comments. I'm not aware of any restrictions on taking photo's in the malls over here. I didn't see any signs on the way in and no-one gave me a second glance (other than my family ;)) as far as I know.

Thanks. We will probably be back there again sometime soon as we have to keep coming up to Bristol Childrens Hospital at the moment. Look forward to seeing your take on the shopping centre in #2
