I just thought I'd pass along a tip that my wife suggested today. I have an old 70-210 f3.5-4.5 that I used with my A2E, but it suffers from bad zoom creep. She suggested that a bit of mounting putty, which you can pick up at a Crafts store would work. You just tear off a tiny piece (it's like chewing gum) and then when pointing camera downwards, once you have zoomed to desired length, just slap a tiny bit of this on the camera at the zoom ring. Holds it right in place! Peels off easily - sort of reminds me of Silly Putty.
I'm sure you may have other thoughts, but that is one that does the trick. I know nothing plagues me more than to set up the tripod to take carefully composed shot, set the self timer, press the shutter button and then watch the zoom slide out while I'm waiting for the shutter to trip!
