So my canon rebel 2000 is on the fritz right now and rather than replace the part needed i was thinking about buying a new camera. I have also a canon digital rebel, and was wondering what is the most compatable in terms of lenses when i comes to canon SLR cameras. I was going to try and pickup a ti or Elan-7n from ebay if i could. Also, I was wondering about a really good all around lens. I was looking at the canon 17-85 super wider image stabalized lens. It looked awsome! but, it only works with the digital rebel and not the film. So what lens should i buy and what camera?

for a film camera, depending on your budget look into a used eos a2 - you can usually get one from keh.com or ebay (be carefull) for the same price as a new 7n body alone

for lenses - sadly there is no "good all around lens" out there - you need to buy one that will fit your needs. most people will tell you that if you dont need a fast, bright lens that the 28-135 IS lens from canon is a great bang for the buck. personally, its not fast enough for me. other then that, buy a 50mm f/1.8 (or a 50mm f/1.4 if its in your budget) as they never go out of style and t hen choose lenses based on what you are shooting.

you can't go wrong with:
16-35 f/2.8L
24-70 f/2.8L
70-200 f/2.8L IS
35-350 f/3.5-5.6L
28-350 f/3.5-5.6L

I don't know your budget, and I don't know what other lens you have, but EF24-85 or EF28-105 (F3.5-4.5 version not F4-5.6) are very good lens for the money. Or EF28-135IS is very good on FF camera although it si a little more expensive (~$400) than other two, but you get IS and good range of zoom.
