I was curious if anyone else would be attending the 2008 Oceana Air Show, September 19-21 in Virginia Beach, VA. The details of the event are here (http://www.oceanaairshow.com/).
This will be my first time seeing the Angels, and my second air show ever, seeing the Thunderbirds for the first time last year.
So who is going? Do you want to try and meet up?

Hope no one stands in front of you. Oceana is a great venue for a show . Nice background of trees for low level flybys. As long as there is no fog you should be golden.:) Its kinda a shame more and more shows are going away from general seating ( bring your own chair ) as these areas are shrinking every year. Which I can understand to get more revenue for the events due to higher costs.

If I have front row seats then who could stand in front of me? Someone from the AFB? That would suck. Maybe a large lens will persuade them to move a little. :D

Fog shouldn't be a problem that time of year (I grew up in Va Beach under one of Oceana's flight paths). It's been so long since I've been to Oceana, I wish I had some more help for where to set up. As was said above, Oceana is a great place for an airshow. Better than some of the other locations I've been to in the past.
Enjoy!

Grew up in VB and have lived in Hampton Roads my whole life...never been to an air show, lol! No guarantees, but I'll mark it on the calendar!

I do alot of airshows , and you would be surprised how people will flock to the front to get a view of an act such as Shockwave or any other similar act happening on the ground or even when the Blues get ready to do their thing .The Blues always seem to put on a great show at Oceana,so you are in for a treat.

I'll likely be there for one day at least. It is a great venue too. I worked on the base for a year and have been to the Air Show there twice. You really are in for a treat. There really isn't a "bad" seat there, you just have to keep people from standing in front of you, but your lens will deter them some.
I still live in the flight path so I don't really have to go to be able to see most of the flight action. :) At least I love jet noise. :D

If anyone wants to meet up, I am game. I'll have my 20D with my 10-22mm for ground displays and my 70-200mm w/ 1.4x TC for flight displays. Miaght also bring along the 200mm 2.8.

Sounds awesome doesn't it? 74 will be so nice compared to the past few days!
I have front row seats, but can try to meetup if anyone wants too. Wouldn't mind meeting some POTNers. :D

WOW...some fantastic shots. I have been going to Oceana for several years now and if you go to 1 airshow this year...this is the 1 you want it to be! I go to many airshows along the east coast and Oceana is THE best! I will be there Saturday. Has anyone living in the area seen the fleet flyby practice? I hear they are doing something special this year and I'm wondering what it is.
Thanks

I'm going to make the trip from Atlanta for the show on sat. I will buy a ticket for the grandstands and shoot from there. Jeffrey- it would be good to catch up!
I'll be in a boonie cap and shooting with my 1d2n and 300/2.8L in one hand and the 70-200/2.8L on the 20d in the other ;) Feel free to say hi.
Here are a couple from 2005 that I have handy:

By the way- any of the locals like to pick a place to meet up afterwords on Sat? I know they are doing the thing down at the beach but I expect that to be very painful.
Any place kinda accessible off of a highway with open seating we could just grab a few tables at (eg- sports bar, etc)?? BA should end by 430p, allow time to empty- figure 645 or 7pm.
Just a thought.

If you just wanna get together for dinner, we can hit up a place down at the oceanfront for seafood...of there are some nice places at Va Beach's Town Center.

I will be there Saturday in the reserved seating section. We have front row seats, I think they are in the 300s if I am not mistaken. I'll keep my eye out for you guys. Any POTN neck straps to make it easier?
Any chance I can try out that 300 2.8? ;)

I'll have my Lowepro Slingshot 200. I have used it at both Oceana and Langley with no problems. You will, however be searched going in. Remember, no knives, multitools, etc, etc, etc.....

I got in to Pope last year with my Domke so I hope I am fine here as well. I am cleaning out any "stuff" from my bag now as I don't want to accidentally take something that is prohibited. Last year I had a screwdriver in my tripod bag that I forgot about. Had to throw it away. :o

Two years ago I got in with my medium size Domke-like PJ bag one day, and they threw a fit the next.
So I'm just bringing my vest, everything fits on and in it.
I used to have a POTN neck strap, then I lost it at the NHRA Drag races this year... I will have on my large vest, in the bleachers...
As far as it goes with the 300/2.8 stranger things have been known to happen- but only for a minute or two :)

Mark, was good to see you again Saturday. Mike, it was nice to meet you.
As for the show, I was quite disappointed. The weather and low clouds hurt us bad. Caused a few routines (including the much hyped fleet flyby) to be cancelled. Logistics getting off and on the based sucked too. Getting off the based was the single most cluster f*ck I have EVER experienced at an airshow....ever. Mike, I take back EVERYTHING I said about it being easy to get off base at Oceana.

It was nice to meet you and Mark. Th weather was a bummer, especially when you have a 7 hour drive and have planned it months ahead, but oh well, at least it wasn't raining!
Oh yeah, we got off the base in less than 30 minutes.
