I have a canon 40d and 24-70 lense. I just purchased the above canon flash and the flash cord to attach to camera hot shoe and bracket. I want to start to shoot in ettl mode . I was with a photographer and saw just about every image was on the money and gorgeous. I was shooting manual flash and camera on manual ( I am an old time photographer ). I like the results and will start to shoot this week with my New canon 580 ex ll. Any advice on what to do or how to set up my flash, camera etc. Greatly appreciated, rollsman

Well set the flash to ETTL then try it and see what happens. Read up on FEC (flash exposure compensation). If you have troubles come back and ask questions.

The overall tone of your subject will have a big influence on how the camera exposes the picture in ETTL mode. Use FEC to compensate if the subject is not exactly neutral in tone. Just make sure that the E-TTL II is set to Evaluative instead of Average (via the camera menu).

Use manual mode on your camera, unless you are only using the flash for fill, in which case you need to dial your FEC way down.

Go out and shoot a bunch with the flash, then come back and read it again, and again, and....
