The total absence of wind made for perfect reflections all morning (taken 7/2003).

it does look like a crater with a beautiful lake in the centre.
it's almost unreal looking.

did you have to climb very high to get to where you took the picture ?

just guessing a little (as it was 'o3) was the photo taken with film ?
lovely reflections . can feel the stillness and calm all over

In the upper left corner ... is that Mt. Shasta far off in the distance?

Actually Marie, it is a real crater with a lake in the center. ;)

Nice shot sparker.

Additional note: The crater was caused when a volcano collapsed.

Beautiful.
This lake is only around 6800 years old. Like Jim said, it was formed when a volcano (Mount Mazama) collapsed into the void left underneath by a huge eruption. Hard to believe looking at how serene it looks now :-) !

Well, Marie, you've had several answers before I checked back. Not only is the lake in the crater of the old volcano, but other eruptions have created "islands" in the lake. The lake is approx. 1943 feet deep, the deepest in the US, and is the clearest water in the US. The only source of water is snow and rain, the only loss is evaporation. The lake's level never changes more than a few feet. A road goes around the rim of the crater, making it a short walk to numerous overlooks. One can hike down into the crater via a mile-long, steep trail (I've never done it).

Crater Lake is one of my favorite places and it draws me back periodically. Last time there, 2003, I was using a Sony Mavica digital camera. I had never seen the water so smooth, but the wind picked up around noon.

Thanks everyone.

Forgot to answer Dave's question about the distant mountain, which is Mt Thielsen, another volcano to the north of Crater Lake. Mt Shasta, of course, is south. I don't recall ever seeing Mt Shasta from Crater Lake, but it may be possible in very clear weather.

Thanks Stan...

After seeing your photo I will definately swing through there this summer on the "Great 40" Roadtrip. Will be loading up the Motorcycle and making a circuit, figured on hitting Yellowstone, Glacier and the Canadian parks before catching a ferry home from Alaska. Now I'll start by dropping south and then head east.

Dave (turbowolf), I checked out your great website recently. Really enjoyed all the nice pics of animals, wish you had some large ones. In your travels, try to make it to Hyder, Alaska. It's not that far from Olympia, and when the salmon are running (late July/Aug), there are lots of bears readily viewable...blacks and grizzlies. Also, some wonderful glaciers nearby.

Boomer, thanks, and hope you get to visit Crater Lake. I've got a whole section of Crater Lake shots in my gallery (Oregon).

After I get back from Yellowstone at the end of the month I plan to update the site. This will include adding large pictures to the gallery section, just tight for time now to enlarge the site. However, I will be uploading to the site from the field (Bluetooth phone for a modem. As long as I have a cell signal I can update.)

Side note - I've ordered a tracking collar system for animal studies. This spring I'll be studying the foxes on campus then this summer most likely shift to tracking wolves in NW Montana once the research proposal gets accepted. But until the proposal is accepted I'll pln on a trip to Katmai in Alaska...resisting the call of the bears is futile

I didn't realise it was actually inside the volcano mountain itself
thought it may be just named crater because of surroundings looking like the moon
(or something)

I was on the top of Mount Etna in Sicily (as far as is allowed)
and there's nothing like that inside
real errie smoky, like as though right on the moon (well ,you know what I mean)
(loved it though)
also on Volcano, nothing like it
also Stromboli

otherwise we'd all be going for high in the sky lakeside holidays:lol:

you mention the road
cars must be allowed a certain distance which helps a lot

thanks a lot
it's a beautiful view and picture

and you mention it's digital too:)

thanks

The closest thing to Crater Lake in the Mediterranean area would be Santorini (the island of Thera), where the volcano collapsed into the void left by the erupted magma.
This collapse occured at the height of Minoan civilisation in the area (1620BC), and is probably party responsible for it's collapse. It's is also a possible candidate for "Atlantis" lengends :-)

Somehow, this does not look like morning light. It looks like early afternoon light, from the direction. You were along the west side, and the sun was high over your right shoulder.

I was up there for a few days one April, as we skied all the way around the lake. It took us about 48 hours and two snow camps. Never saw the whole lake during that time as it was cloudy.

I have recently experimented with USM, which I had not been using. I agree I overdid this shot, as it shows a funny look to the near foreground trees. From where I was taking that shot, I'd guess it was between 10-11 am. By 1 pm, the wind was up and reflections gone.

Travel plans for 2005 are shaping up. Spring will find us visiting Calloway Gardens in Georgia, then the Smokey Mountains of NC. After a quick return to Fl to check on the Grand-daughters, it's off to Colorado. We spent five weeks there in 2003, not nearly enough. Will do some hiking in Rocky Mountain NP, wildflower photography around Crested Butte, and some jeep trails around Lake City, Silverton, Ouray and Telluride. I've already gotten excited just researching the hikes.
We will also spend a little time in Utah and Nevada. (Living in a motorhome makes all this feasible.)

Thats a truly amazing shot you got. I can not believe how blue the lake looks. Great job! Do you have any other pictures like that?

Meghan :)
