Lovely pics Toby - you got a good one with that lense of the BBC - was that with the limiter on taken at the nearer distance (with/without support lol)?
It got a great action shot of the dog too.

Lovely GH too

limiter was off (3.5m -oo) some taken MF others AF. Not sure about this lens for dragons, you have to hold it rock steady and get a high shutter speed. Often regret letting my 300 f4L go as it had IS but on the other hand it was too short a tele for birds which I occasionally like to shoot.

Nice set Toby. No dragons around here yet. Only shots I have are of a broad bodied chaser, also used the 400mm lens. Not having much success with it really. Take 10 shots 1 will be sharp, never mind will persevere. Wish I'd got the mpe-65 instead.

You might try the sell forum - 'my 400 for your MPE plus £100' - the 400 is a favorite of birders and there must be a few who bought the MPE and then realised macro isn't really for them?

Thanks for the info Toby - yep, I dont think I would deliberately use mine for DFs either, I find its a bit of a beast to handle sometimes. To be honest, I have had great success for bird shots with my 70-400 F4L but limited success with the 400mm, depending on size of bird and distance.

Brian - I have mixed feelings about my 400mm too and I am still persevering with mine but I wont rely on it for good bird shots, as I will put my 70-200 F4L on if I want to be sure of good shots and be content with the lower distance, but I know I will have much better keeper rate with it.

I had an incident with it last week when I was off, while I was shooting some Little Egrets and have got the hump with that lense a bit  lol.

some decent DF images here shot with the 400mm :

I will try again with extension tubes as the minimum focus distance is too far sometimes.
