My 89 year old mom thinks all these oil accidents are not simple human error, she's convinced they are terror attacks and we just have not figured it out yet. I agree there have been alot since 2001. Could she be right? Are we really that dumb?? What do you all think? Just wondering. Thanks in advance.

I doubt this is the case, as "terrorist" attacks are generally done in a way to be blantantly obvious it is some sort of attack, as to incite fear or "terror" into the people they are targetting. Creating oil spills that look like accidents wouldn't really help most "terrorist" causes.

I'd be more inclined to think there is oil companys intentionally doing this to raises oil prices as has been previously mentioned, but that too seems a little extreme to me.

Given the clean-up costs, insurance costs, fines and negative publicity, I don't think it would be worth an oil company risking it... :?

Unfortunately, accidents happen and given the impact of this type of accident it's big news. Had the colliding boats been carrying anything that didn't cause environmental damage and was not as sensitive to us as oil is give the current price, I doubt anyone would even have heard about it. Because oil and environmental damage are big news, it gets reported so we think there are more accidents of this type proportionally than there really are. They're still terrible though :(

How tragic. The environment of that area will be screwed up for quite some time.
