I just bought a 40d from a member on the forums, but the software did not come with it. I can get the pictures off of the camera by using the software from the XTi that I had, but when I try and open it in adobe photoshop, it doesn't work. The pictures were shot in RAW btw. Is there any way to make this work?

Update CS3: see FAQ (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=244018). Lots more info in FAQ.

I used this same program yesterday with my XTi and it seemed to work fine then. I plugged in the 40D just now and took the pictures straight from the camera by going to My Computer and had no succes.

What version of photoshop are you using, and what version of ACR (adobe camera RAW)?

I am using CS3 and and I'm not sure about the other. I just downloaded camera raw 4.4.1 and converted to DNG and then it worked in CS3. Should I try and find the software for the 40d?

Now you have the latest version you can open CR2 files directly, once you properly install ACR.

Adobe ACR 4.2 and above should open 40D raw files. It would be a lot easier and quicker to download your cards from a card reader. If you have DPP from your xTI it will open the raw files also, although it may need to be updated.

If I download the files from a card reader, will I not have the same problem? Also, this is a dumb question, but how can I delete my whole CF card at once on the 40d?

Opening files in Photoshop has nothing to do with how you get them onto the PC. Just follow the install instructions for ACR.
To clear the card use the format function on the 40D, it's in one of the menus.

Thank you. One last thing. How come in my XTi, It says i get roughly 800 shots shooting in RAW with an 8gb CF and in the 40D it says I get just over 600?

The 40D produces 10megapixel 14 bit files, the XTi produces 12 bit files, no idea how many megapixels. In short - the 40D makes bigger files.

Opening files in Photoshop has nothing to do with how you get them onto the PC.
It does when the Raw files aren't transferred... And ISTR that windows has some troubles there when transferring through the camera.
Q to the OP: Do you have the CR2 files on your HDD?

My CR2 files are on my HDD, saved where all of my other RAW files are.
