Would it be possible for Canon to make an adaptor so that the G series camera could use EF lenses?
Maybe they are totally different systems as I imagine they are, but this would be a great feature.

This probably isn't what you were thinking of but you can use any lens in a reversed orientation to get an even closer "macro" by using a special (but simple) "coupler" adapter as shown here, http://lightdescription.blogspot.com/2008/03/g9-macro.html.

I suppose... But you're still limited by the tiny, tiny sensor. And most P&S cameras come close to some fairly long 35mm glass anyway (the G9, for example, hits 210mm in 35mm equiv.).
Too bad the ol' APS-C camera EOS IX (http://www.canon.com/camera-museum/camera/film/data/1996-2000/1996_eos-ix-e.html?lang=us&categ=crn&page=1996-2000) never made it into the digital era.
