I'm thinking of picking one of these up until I can afford replace my gear.

Well, I've really wanted to pick up a lighter weight carry around camera, as my Rebel with the 17-85 was a little heavy(Hope the thief hurts his neck).

I know the G9 is not a pocket camera, but how portable is it? Basically, I guess I'm asking if it's much lighter and portable than lets say a Rebel XT with a 17-85IS lens on it?

How do you guys like it?

Are the 4X6 pictures decent?

How is the Zoom?

How are the movie clips?

Thanks again!!

I'd say, by itself with none of the lens add ons, it is about half the size of the XT and lens you mention, maybe a touch less.

Like it a lot. I have a 5D and 40D and a lot of glass. This is my fun camera and it works well. At low ISO and good light, it is outstanding. If you shoot in raw and use a decent raw converter you will do very well and much better than the camera's jpg processing.

Yes. very much so.

How is the Zoom?

Ok. Works fine. Be nice to have a wider wide end, down to 28mm equiv instead of 35.

How are the movie clips?

Dunno. never used it, it's a don't care for me.

While the G9 is not the ideal "pocket camera" it will fit in a pocket. I have put it in my shorts and pants pockets before.

The zoom is fine, but could be wider. It is also doesn't allow you to fine tune the zoom. You cannot always get it exactly where you want it. It isn't a big deal though.

I really enjoy the movie mode. It is not a video camera, but the video quality is quite good in my opinion.

It's not the most portable camera out there, certainly - but the features and quality of it make it worthwhile, IMO. In reality it's not too bad though, especially if you get a nice case... You can go the "mini camera bag" route if you need extra SDHC cards, batteries and accessories - or you can go the minimalist route, getting a case that's quite snug and not necessarily offer more extra space than for a spare SDHC and battery. I have both, depending on what I need... Either way, it's still smaller than a DSLR and even the smallest of lenses - and lighter.

Dunno, lol, maybe you can find something here to relate to regarding portability.

That's the Pro1. I have one and it's a great camera with a great L quality lens on it. The lens is not removable but it is L glass.

Zoom is great compared to other G series. I love the fact that now what I see in the distance with my eyes is what I can capture with the camera pretty much without cropping.

The G9 has some great features, but is missing good things from the G6 and earlier. Like grip, remote control, accesibility of the controls, swivel screen, using SD cards.

As for the 4x6 printing, of course it is fantastic, you get fantastic prints at that size for all the G series right back to the G1, if you are talking A2 photo quality prints then they are still fantastic with the G9

As mentioned it was the Pro 1 model, as mentioned it has a 58mm filter thread on the end of the fixed lens, yes you can add adititional lense to these camera by mounting it to the 58mm filter thread, you can use filter mount thread wide angle or telephoto lenses.

As for L series lens, that camera was quite dissapointing. Especially when you read Canon's statements about there L series lenses, as this camera has quite a few problems with chromic abberation (which shouldn't be there) as well as distortions
