Neither really knock me out, but I do prefer the second one (both are captured well, they just don't do much for me). I like the quiet, serene feel of the scene (not so much the scene itself, but the feel of it), only to be broken by the train rushing by.

I find the light pole and light distracting in each photo as it draws my eyes away from the main focus of the scene.

I think a little faster shutter speed on both would have helped.

Good ideas. I think it helps to have the light in the shots. Keep refining the technique & see what you can come up with.
I'm not caring for the blown light in the building doorway though. A layer mask + a darker exposure would help with that: Post #9:

I like the first shot. Agree that the light post is a bit much.

You have a lot better shots Joe. The first shot looks unlevel even though it's not.

I'd like to see a more neutral white balance on #2, and maybe some more subject. The foreground as it is is just striking me as dead space.

#2 isn't bad, maybe turn the color temp down a 1000-2000k and see how it is.

Welcome to transportation...the first shot is interesting....the horizon seems to have some issues...but it appears to be an optical illusion.
