When you are on a shoot, do you keep turning the camera off and on, or do you let it go to "sleep" then wake it up for the next picture?

sleep

Definitely sleep... ESPECIALLY with the 20D now that it's a .2 second recovery time.

sleep... missed some shots with the rebel due to this, but the 20D is much better. Saves some major battery life.

I believe Chuck Westfall actually wrote a statement about this subject concerning the 1Dmk2: turning the camera off or using sleep mode does not make any difference in terms of power consumtion. In both cases the systems are not using any.

I can't remember the last time I turned it off actually. Probably the last time I swapped batteries.

Hey I was going to ask this one!
I usually forget to switch off my 20D, that switch is fiddly anyway. I have left it on for days without the battery running down, it is also just pick up and shoot then!

Always let mine go to sleep. The battery seems to last forever. I've often had to swap to a second part way through the day, but I've never run out of juice.

I don't turn it off and I also have sleep mode disabled. It's always on and ready to go.

I have a 10D with a battery grip and I turn it off when I put it away in the camera bag, when I take it out of the bag I turn it on. A couple of weeks ago I went to the jetboat racing and had the camera on for over 5 hours, taking 2080 pics - without changing batteries! That's right 2080 pics on the 2 batteries (Canon standard 1100mAh BP-511) in the battery grip. I have taken a handful of pics since and left the camera on when putting it in the bag (so it was on for 30 minutes before going to sleep). I should charge those batteries at some point!

I guess this answers my question! Thanks, everyone!

I'm so stupid - or maybe a rememberance of the ole days when NiCd batteries ran empty quite quick - that I always make sure to switch my 20D off when not shooting. :o
But I'm not so happy with that since I think that the switch lever could suffer from too many actuations.
Reading what you all do (just forget it) I think I'm gonna change my (bad?) habits and rely on the auto-sleep function. If I have a bit of time, I'll try measuring how many (if any) milli- or mico-amps the sleep mode drains from the battery. :p
