Hi,

I've decided to take up photography as a hobby, I've always been interested it it, but never did anything about it!

I got a Canon PowerShot S60 over Christmas and have been playing with it a bit.

Here's my first effort, comments welcome :)

Glad you started :)

The picture dosn't do much for me. You don't have much range in the tones. It looks like you "painted" the picture in one color. I hope this is what you wanted, keep trying! I started a year or so ago too.

Hi Rich,
The mistake you made was telling everyone you are new to photography.
You should have said I've been a photographer for many years and I'm knew to digital.
That way they would have been a bit more cautious in there response.

That said the pic seem to slope of to the right a bit, doesn't it. :)

Welcome to the forum Rich,

It's a good try for a first. However, perhaps if you had turned more to left, that way you would have lost the lamp post at the right side and made more of the curve of the parked cars which I find very pleasing and which helps take the eye into the shot and towards the church.

At least you did one thing right - "posted one shot and asked for a critique" unlike some that use this board!

Keep clicking and posting, most of all have fun.

Cheers
David

Compositionally, I'd say you have a rather large conflict between your subject, which I assume
is the church (?) in the background, and the parking lot. Subjects need to be isolated as much as
possible.

Thanks for the comments, getting peoples critisism is the best way of learning what you're doing right and wrong IMO.

The weather here has been rubbish so far, I'm hoping it brightens up a bit so I can go on my first photography outing and try a few different things. :)

I like the subject matter you chose, Rich, as I love old stone buildings such as that one. Try getting up close on some of those windows, or the spires at the top of the bldg. If you have a "passion" for photography, you will become as good as you want to be. Best wishes from across the pond.

My thinking is that you have a great contrast between the old (the building) and the new (cars) but somehow I don't think they belong together. Without the cars, and with some cropping, this picture could look like a classic shot of an old English cathedral, pre-modern age.

OK, I popped into London at the weekend and took a few pictures, it was dark and raining, so not much light, bit some of the colours came out nicely (I think)
