The SS Minnow was a chartered fishing boat that took some passengers for a three hour tour but ran into trouble. A huge storm came up and tossed the tiny ship ashore on a deserted island. The crew of two and the passengers, (A b-movie actress, a farm girl, a Professor, a wealthy industrialist and his wife) were trapped there for years.
Very famous story.

Hahahaha....I get it. :) The boat was near the hangar. I think the NYPD towed it there. :)

I've driven by that old airport that you've taken pictures of. South Brooklyn if memory serves me, and its almost on the water front, because I was coming off of the bridge after crossing the bay from the island where my wifes grandmother lived.

The Floyd Benett Field. It isn't really abandoned but the hangars aren't being used. NYPD trains their heli pilots there. The area is also the head quarter for NYC sanitations. I even saw couple of army barracks but abandoned. I was too afraid to take pictures of them. It is an army base and I really don't want to do anything that remotely looked like terrorist activities. :)

Were you not able to go inside the hangar on that day? Was it closed? There are/were a lot of sweet treasures (http://fromtheflightdeck.com/Stories/FMFloydBennett/floyd_bennett.htm) inside. Well, it did has been a while since I last visited the place so maybe something has changed. But that place has a lot of history (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Floyd_Bennett_Field) and the whole base is actually a National Park (http://www.nps.gov/history/nr/travel/aviation/flo.htm).
Great set of urban pictures, btw. Love the first one!
(Hint: that old engine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pratt_%26_Whitney_R-4360) in picture #4 used to go on a plane similar to this one (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KC-97_Stratotanker).)
