I already own a Canon EOS XTI, but would like to purchase a PowerShot camera just for a quick shot here and there and for my husband to have with him. Just general shots that can be taken quickly. Anyway, I like the PowerShot SD1100 IS which is 8 megapixels, but now I noticed that Canon has some new PowerShots such as the PowerShot SD890 IS which is 10 megapixels. I can't decide which one to buy. Please give me both pros and cons for both the 8 and 10 megapixels and anything else you can think of. I don't want to spend more than $100.00 more for the 10 megapixels. Could you please tell me if there would be a big difference in the 8 and the 10. Also, I'm not in a rush so if there are any rumors that Canon might come out with a higher megapixel camera, I'd hate to hurry and buy either camera and then be disappointed that a new one is coming out. Thank you so much for any advice and insight.
Sincerely and With Respect,

Hi and welcome!!...
I carry a Digital ELPH 750, a compact that is very helpful. I got it once to shoot some video of aerial photography, as I wanted to show my kid how things looked from a helicopter (he's six). Now I just take it with me everyhwere I go. Even if the bag of Canon bodies is at home, I can shoot photos of an accident I may get involved in, some breaking news, etc. After working the beat for a while, I just cannot bear to go around without a camera. I just don't like it. Feels like driving without one's wallet.
Cheers :)

First let me say, that the looking for a Canon PowerShot, is definitely a step in the right direction ;)
Personally, I carry an SD400 and I am very happy with it, it's old though and has been discontinued.
If I had to purchase a new supercompact today I'd probably go for the SD870 (http://www.dprguru.com/?model=SD870) for it's wide angle lens. If wide angle is not a big concenrn, some of the other powershot models may be better choices.
Here (http://www.dprguru.com/?model=powershot) you may find links to the majority of the PowerShot camera reviews, written by the leading camera review websites (e.g. dpreview (http://www.dpreview.com), imaging-resource (http://www.imaging-resource.com), steves-digicams (http://www.steves-digicams.com), ken rockwell (http://www.kenrockwell.com), etc).
(I am a big fan of the SD series in particular, because of their supercompact size, and fast response time. AFAIK, all powershot models are fast and responsive, the A series are lerger bodies, and least expensive compared to the SD series, if you're on a tight budget, you may prefer A, I think the only sacrifice going from SD to A is camera size, the optical performance is roughly the same)
Hope this helps.

Oh, thank you both. This does help. I just want a small camera to carry around with me. Price I would likely pay is between $200-$300. Thanks for helping. I will check out your links. Wide angle would be nice.

the A590 IS is under $200 and the IS is nice, not many manual settings, but a good point and shoot. I have messed with one for a bit after helping a friend pick one and it's a winner of a P&S for that price...

If you want wide angle and don't need manual controls, then check out TZ4 and TZ5 from Panasonic, fantastic compact cameras with a 10x optical zoom and more importantly, wide angle.
