How many have decided to keep their 10D and not upgrade to the 20D (or any other Canon DSLR?)

I am pleased with my 2-10D's and have made an intentional decision to stay with them for now. The 20D is a great camera, but I don't need the speed or larger image size possible.

Not upgrading, saving for a backup 1D (Version 1), slightly more expensive, but I need a very good AF, which only the 1 series can provide..........

I can't vote since I just upgraded to the 10D from a D30 thanks to dropping prices :-) after the 20D!

I have got the 10d and don't plan on upgrading to the 20d. I would like to get the 1dmk2 but that is way out of my price range.

No thanks...the 20D is a nice camera, but not worth upgrading at this time.

I shot with the D60 for over 2 years but finally decided to upgrade to the 10D the end of April--primarily for the better high ISOs since I shoot a lot in available light. My intention was to sell it quickly in the Fall when the 'new' upgrade was announced at PHotokina (which we all expected) and buy the new body (now known as the 20D). However, I found that it suited me fine---and that I would prefer to wait for something that is closer to what I really want--though I am sure the 20D is a terrific camera (I have shot several times with one). I shoot with it, a D60 and occasionally a D30--and will until the next generation comes around--or perhaps consider a used 1Ds.

I haven't mastered the 10D yet, so why should I upgrade.
Or is it a fashion accessory. :)

After some research, field testing and more than I can count message reading concerning the 20D and it's attributes, I decided to add it to my arsenal of digital bodies which included the Fuji S2 and 10D. I've had the 20D about 3 weeks now and don't regret the purchase. You've all read the posts and know that it's instant on, and instant paging through shots (that's really nice - no waiting for low to high resolution loading to the lcd like on the 10D) as well as the improved AF (speed and accuracy) Judging with the same lens (24-70 f2.8L) on both the 10D and 20D, I've also noticed better contrast and white balance/color saturation. (Settings are identical - shot raw and imported using the PS raw converter)

There are, however, two things - at least with my 20D, that are not an improvement...per se. Noise levels in darker areas seem to be about the same as my 10D. At ISO settings above 800, it's very similar to the 10D. This is not necessarily a complaint, since the noise signature is fairly smooth. Also, the 20D does not put out quite as sharp an image as the 10D, but it is a bigger image (8.2 vs 6.3 mp) and reacts very favorably to sharpening in PS.

To make a long story short, I get better pictures from my 20D than my 10D, but it's not an earth-shattering difference. I decided to keep my 10D as a backup - instead of "giving" it away on eBay.

I don't regret upgrading, but if you can't afford it... it probably wouldn't hurt waiting for the next model.

A very interesting review especially in respect of the noise levels.

I love my 10D and I don't think I could bear to part with it. I know it's wrong to be sentimentally attached to a piece of work gear but I've been through a lot with it - some pretty dodgy gig moshpits for a start.

But I am upgrading to a 1Ds Mk II. It'll be a big bro for my 10D! :D

20D is a great camera and had I not owned a 10D and was going to buy my first dSLR it would have been the 20D, without doubt ... but

Owning the 10D I didn't see enough of a change to chuck the 10D and put more money on a body. Instead, I'll continue to upgrade my lenses and accessories over time and when I do upgrade the body it'll likely be another upgrade or two down the road. As far as I'm concerned the 10D still puts out some nice photos and as long as I'm pleased, that's good enough for me.

I have kept my 10D as a backup to my 1D Mark II. It goes with me to places where I wouldn't dream of taking the Mark II and sits with a smaller lens on when I am trackside for those close in shots. Still a very fine, usefull camera. I have no intention of parting with it.

Well,..

I did upgrade to 20D... (ducks for cover)

Nothing wrong with my 10D.. would have kept it too.. as I now can;t seem to live wihtout a second body.. but I have another Camera as well.. so 20D became my back up.

The primary reasons for the upgrade?
1; AF Speed, and and other timings in general,.
2; And the resolution of course.
3; Also,. as a long telephoto shooter.. the pixel density was a large factor.
4; It has more in common with my primary camera,. so that is a bit of an advantage,.
5; and it is slightly smaller and lighter than the 10D which is another advantage,...

Like Cadwell,. I too like to keep a smaller camera for those times when a beast would be out of place. I do not have ,. nor will I get a portrait grip for the 20D for this reason.

And it's great with a small fast prime on it like the 85mm or 50mm,.. or when I'm birding and I have the 500mm on the other camera.. a 100-400mm zoom on the 20D keep me ready for anything.

The 20D is great, I'd love to have it instead of my 10D, but for me it's not worth the upgrade from the 10D. I'll wait for the successor to the 20D in two years time or so.

I like the specs on the 20D, but every time I use my 10D I find it handles the task quite well. I might not buy the 30D either, but if I don't then I will most likely buy the 40D (or whatever they call the next 2 cameras).

My 10D has already saved my over twice its purchase price in terms of what film and processing would have cost, but I would like to get 5 years of service out of the camera if possible. I would rather buy 2 or 3 L lenses first and get a new camera later.

jumped straight from the 300d to the 20d, although ive used the 10d quite a bit and knowing that I dont have 4k for a mkII I would upgrade from the 10d to the 20d...I get much nicer shots with it in low light conditions...the noise at high iso's and AF alone is enough for me to upgrade...but thats because a lot of my time is spent shooting in a Stadium.

For the moment the 10D, combined with my film 1N, is sufficient for my current needs so no I won't be going to the 20D - however in time things might change.

Ive upgraded from the 10D to the 20D with no regrets at all, the 10D is a very nice capable camera and the 20D just improves on an already good camera in just about every way.
My 10D is now sold :( and is sitting next to me waiting to be posted, Ill be sad to see it go but since I bought the 20D its not been used.

I do weddings. I have two 10D cams. I would like to swap them out for two 20D cams, but, since I have been improving my camera technique and having realized that staying away from shooting "wide open" and maintaining a sensible DOF by selecting appropriate settings, I have been getting nothing but great shots. Also, since I now know how to control flash exposure, my 10D cams have been giving me great photos. When I first started shooting with the 10D, I was having trouble with up to 25% of the shots, now, out of about 600 shots per wedding, I only have trouble with about 1 to 3% of the shots. Virtually all of my shots come out sharp and properly exposed. I can now start shooting fewer shots because the image quality of all my shots are so good. Sure keeps the processing time way down, I am making alot more money per hour these days.

So here's the issue. While I would love to get the on-point improvements that the 20D has over the 10D, i.e., faster shooting, better fast focusing, better ISO, FASTER LCD, two more mega pixels, the four-way LCD image toggling control, etc., I am getting such good results currently with my 10D cams because I know how to control flash and DOF, by getting the 20D I probably couldn't improve on a 98% keeper ratio. Acknowleding that the 20D is better in important ways, knowing how to properly use the 10D gets me all the results I need when I need them. It's like upgrading from a new Corolla to a new Honda Accord...Not that much functional difference in the end and travelling time is the same. The effect to transportation is the same.

My 10D stays with me ! I just don't see how faster wake-up / AF / shooting times and more MP can improve my photography at this point.

I upgraded from a 300D to the 20D for the following primary reasons in order of importance to me:

1. Instant on
2. ETTL-II
3. Low noise at high ISOs

As I expected, instant on is great. Nothing bugged me more than bringing the camera to my eye only to discover it had gone to sleep and I was going to have to wait. If you shoot anything that moves, this feature is very helpful.

While it's not perfect, ETTL-II has also met my expectations. Flash photography is more enjoyable when I don't have to worry about FEL.

Finally, the 20D seems a bit better at high ISOs, but not to the degree I expected based on the initial reviews and Canon's press releases.

Overall, I'm very happy with the 20D. For those who are considering an upgrade, to my eye, image quality is not a big improvement over the 10D and 300D and it should not be a primary reason for the upgrade. Rather, upgrade if the features of the 20D will improve your enjoyment of the experience and help you get a few extra shots that you wouldn't have been able to get with your current camera.

Waiting for the next model, I think. It is too expensive to upgrade every year. Not enough improvements to justify the cost. If I didn't have the 10D, then I would. Besides, I love the 10D.

I am keeping my 10D and I won't be getting a 20D unless something wierd happens. I skipped it and instead drained my savings account to get the 1DsMkII.My 10D is now my primary backup and will remain so until I can pay cash for an upgrade to the 1DsMkII.

I did consider the 20D though with the 10-22 EF-S lens, but decided not to invest in a EF-S lens and thus the 20D since I believe the Canon DSLR will all evenetually end up at FF.

Just my opinion,

10D is my backup camera. I'm not upgrading 10D to 20D because I have not shot 10D once since I got Mark II :!:
I would like to have 1Ds Mark II as second camera - that would reduce need for lens changes in action nicely.

I upgraded my 10D to a 20D, and I am ery happy with my decision.

I was not going to upgrade, I had no plan to upgrade at all. Then I jokingly said to a friend 'I know where there is a 10D for sale' and she decided to buy it.... so I had to buy a replacement. Couldn't afford a 1D MkII so opted for the 20D

I was interested in bird photography and I am pleased to say with improved AF and more cropping options I have been nailing more shots. I for one love the improved CF write times too!

My 10D was a great camera, but I had it for nearly two years and felt the next step would benefit me. Next camera will be a one series.

is the 1Ds mkii as amazing as it sounds ... i am into photography as a job. 31 and fairly tight on the money side of things i want to put myself at a level above the rest of the crowd in South Africa . My photography is fair www.mikelambphotography.com but i really need an experts advice on whether this is the kinfd of equipment that will help me develop... I dont know what my niche will eventually be although i think "people photography" of some sort as you can see , if you visited my site.

Thank you for any advice.

I upgraded to the 20D and the wife got the 10D - which means that I still have it as a backup. I had some reasons - maybe not enough - to go up to the 20D, and I've since found myself very happy that I did. It's a little better in many respects, and I cared enough several of those points to make it worthwhile. But I spent a year with the 10D and after 11,000 frames I was quite happy. But I had the cash and desire and went for it.

Today, though, I'd think twice. A 10D can be had for almost half the price and the 20D replacement should be along in a year. And today I don't have the expendable cash really, so it would be a tough decision.

You won't be unhappy with a 10D.

...and although the 20D is a great camera it isn't better enough to justify an expensive upgrade.
A fair statement, and one that's hard to argue with.

Well, I'm only very semi-pro (only had four photoshoots published so far) so I'm not experienced enough to advise you. For me personally, it's an investment in my future. I want to get more covers and having a 1Ds Mk II means I'll be able to crop and still have enough pixels left over.

Hope that helps a bit!

I got the 20D and kept the D60 (not an option in your poll). If I had a 10D and thought the 20D was worth-while, I'd have done the same thing; keep the old and add the new. Cuts down on lens changes and generally improves system flexibility.

Hi,
Even though the my 10D was only 6 months old, I upgraded to the 20D soon after it became available. It was a more affordable option than upgrading to the 1D MkII.
While shooting autosports last year I too frequently had to wait due to the 'buffer full'. I was shooting RAW and using single shot. I also noticed that the AF was not always fast enough.
I have fotographed one event with the 20D and am very pleased with the improvements - quicker AF and NOT ONE problem with the buffer!
My decision was not influenced by the image quality/resolution as this is very good in the 10D - I have had several images printed at 50x75cm (20"x30") - they are very good.

Cheers
Michael

I found I was going broke having the latest and greatest techno stuff. Having cutting edge toys is almost a disease with me. :)

It's taken a lot of willpower, but I've managed to avoid buying a 20D... (Heck, I even looked at the 1D MkII).. I'm going hang on to the 10D until the 30D comes out. (Or whatever replaces the 20D)
