I hate to say it but my old EOS 28-80mm kit lens is still my best portrait lens. I have some L lenses and a 50mm 1.8 but the kit lens still makes my sharpest portraits. See below.

Either link using IMG tags or hit "post reply" and then the "manage attachments" button. Hit browse, find your image, hit upload, then close. It'll appear automagically.

were you trying to upload a photo over 100k? you can always link to a photo that is on a website (such as pbase, etc.). otherwise, scale the photo down below 100k.

Yes it is over 100K. I will do the Pbase thing. Thanks my friend!

I have two Elan7e film cameras and each came with the 28-90mm kit lens. I read all the time about these being pieces of cr*p, but mine have always been very good. I don't own "L" lenses to compare them to but I have shot many wedding shots with them and there are very good. Oh well....what ever works!

I love my 28-135 IS.....I get 16x20's that are razor sharp at F8-f11. I like being able to zoom and crop at one position. Some people don't like this lens but I love mine and use it all the time even though I have 5 L lenses and a 50 F1.4 and an 85 F1.8. Wide open available light portraits, I use my 28-70 F2.8 L.

My best portrait lens is my 85 f/1.8, although I've got some great ones from the 70-200 as well. I'm normally completely wide open when doing portraits so the 85 really is great.

So how does the 70-200 f4 L do for a portrait lens? I really would like to get the 2.8 but just don't have that kind of money.

It is more than sharp enough but in my experience you should shoot it as close to the long end as possible if you need to blur the background, although for a true head/shoulder portrait you should be close enough to the subject that it will not matter much.

I don't have the f/4 version, but the 70-200 f/2.8L is terrific for outdoor portraits ! You can see some examples here (http://www.pbase.com/olegis/natasha_&page=all). For half-body / torso I like also the 50mm f/1.8 - this cheap little lens delivers superb results !

I have to concur with the 135F2. Some say a little long but you just have to move your feet a little!!:) I also often use my 100F2.8 Macro and the venerable 70-200F2.8...........all do superb portrait shots!
