Why doesn't POTN have a chatroom?

There is the 'General Chat' area, but threads are meant to be related to photography somehow, although most are pretty much just chatting...(just mention a camera in a post every now and then, that normally qualifies) - it also seems to depend who frequents or starts the thread ;)

I think the idea is not to turn the site into MSN, and I tend to agree with this personally.

Spot on....

The only request is that you identify the existing chat threads and join one of them before starting your own. You can usually spot them in the General Chat area........they're the ones with thousands of posts.

Yes and they update pretty regularly. No need for a chat room and if ya wanted, that's why some people posted their s/n's under their profiles.

We have the PM system
We have the ability to add instant messaging id's to our profiles.
We have various groups that have set up Facebook groups.

Chatrooms are liable to be

a) Difficult, if not impossible to moderate
b) Likely to contain discussion that isn't photography related
c) Not contribute to the knowledgebase that is POTN (since any valuable information is lost as soon as it scrolls past the top of the screen)

Exactly, a chatroom is a great place to meet people. Moderators can be appointed to be chat operaters. I think it's a great idea having one, people can ask photography questions, or just chat about current events in the chatroom.

What's the difference between threads and chatting? At least others can read the replies years down the line and still learn stuff.

Chatting is more casual.

Chat rooms attached to forums tend to take traffic away from the forum, having a detrimental effect on the forum content.

Moderators can be appointed to be chat operaters. I doubt that the mods will want to sit and watch a chat room all day!

Don't hate the idea.

The website www.simtropolis.com uses a live chatroom and has amazing threads. I strongly disagree with the fact that it takes content away from the forums. Instead it takes the same reptetitive questions out of the forum.

They might be repetitive to you, but they are first time questions for someone, and we should help that someone. That is the beauty of POTN, we have such great camaraderie here, lets put it to good use.

. . . . the fact that it takes content away from the forums. . . .

Bang-on! ;-)

Changing my posts to show what you're trying to prove isn't good sportsmanship. What I'm saying is that those new people could go to the chatroom and ask those questions instead of making those repetitive new threads.

Pete

Exactly so. As everyone knows, POTN is carefully and sensitively moderated, working with members to make POTN the friendly, respectful forum that it is today.

Chatrooms move far too fast to be effectively moderated. The lapse portions of time in the chatroom could lead to the kinds of remarks and behaviour that we don't tolerate on POTN. And if that happens in a chatroom between POTN members, it could spill out into the proper POTN forums.

In short, the moderators will have little to no control over the chatrooms.

I didn't, I highlighted that you referred to it as a fact, which is essentially what I was saying in my post. The wording quoted is exactly the same as you typed it.

You changed the context.

SF Lights
3rd of September 2008 (Wed), 17:38
So I guess you're saying that simtropolis's chatroom doesn't work? Somehow it's kept pg and even with more than 200,000 members, there's barely ever something said in the chat that goes over that rating, and if it does, then the person is warned and kicked out of the chatroom.

Mike-DT6
3rd of September 2008 (Wed), 17:52
Yes I did. It was just a bit of word-play, so nothing worth getting too annoyed over! You inadvertently agreed with me with the wording of your counter-post, that's all. No offence intended. :-)

Seriously though, what I'm saying is that I believe that chat rooms attached to forums take traffic away from the forum, which has a detrimental effect on the forum's content. The repetitive questions that you suggest would be handled by the chat room first of all take that new-member traffic away from the forum, which in turn loses the forum an active poster. Then the helpful in-forum replies from the experts would never appear and lots of good information would be lost in the chat room. Also, for those repetitive questions to be covered in the chat rooms, the person who helps them wouldn't be in the forum, so again it is taking attention away from the forum.

I didn't say anything about that chat room not working, I said that chat rooms attached to forums have a detrimental effect on the forum's content.

So then how does simtropolis have over 200,000 members and grow by over 100 every day even though they do have a chatroom.

Mike-DT6
3rd of September 2008 (Wed), 18:04
That's implies that I suggested that chat rooms prevent forums existing at all, which isn't what I said.

Maybe they would have more members and better forum content if it wasn't for the chat room. ;-)

Chatrooms and Forums do not co-exist well together.

With a forum it is possible for people all around the world to participate but with chatrooms this is brought to a much more local or at least national level due to time differences.

Chatrooms do not provide the wealth of sticky information that make POTN the great resource that it is.

Becca

I moderated on a chat site for several years and it was one headache after another. Its not that the people were bad people, but in the heat of the moment things were said and done that just threw fuel on the fire until I spent most of my time putting out the blazes.

There are a wealth of chat sites out there that could be utilized if a group of people wanted to go somewhere and chat. I don't think POTN would be well served by adding a chat room.

CyberDyneSystems

POTN will not have a chat room
This is a Forum.
It's totally different animals.
A Chat room is not part of POTN's mission in any way.

There's nothing wrong with them, or wanting to chat in one, it's just not going to happen as part of POTN. It does not fit.

Actually Simtropolis has over 250,000 members. At this time there are only 182 users on line and 9 of them are in chat rooms.

POTN, on the other hand only has a little over 161,000 members but at this time there are 1778 users on line and none of them are in chat rooms.

Simtropolis is always a dying website due to the fact that Sim City 4 is over 5 years old. In the prime, there were over 70 people in the chatroom at any given time and over 5000 people online.
