First time I tried panning shots, taken at Mid Ohio - straight from the camera.

Coming out of turn 1

Not bad. The last on is the best.

Number 2 is the best shot here, the others include armco which i know can be hard to exclude on a race track but spoils these shots. Creative cropping might improve them but remember to give some space in front of the car.

I'm curious as to why you've not edited these? Even with the armco in your shots tweaks to the levels, colour and sharpness would improve these.

What lens were you using?

For pans, you seem to be using a really fast shutter speed (125, 400, 160). 125/160 is ok for starting, but you'll quickly want to slow down to 60 or 80 to really get the right effect. With the 40D you'll be surprised how many good hits you can get with the high-speed burst, AI servo focus and proper technique.

As for the shots you posted, I'm always a fan of shots like #1 where you get a car in the background, in this case going in the other direction. PP those and lets see what you can come up with!

Thanks for the comments and advice. I did use a relatively fast shutter speed - 160 to 125. I will try shooting in the 80 - 60 range the next time. I was using AI Servo and at the slower shot rate. I have not had time to work on the images yet - I will. As for the lens, I used the 28-135 kit lens that came with the camera - I know it's not the best, except for an EF 75-300 it's all I have to work with for now.
