View Full Version : Problem with my Extreme III card and my computer

So I've been using a TRanscend 133x card for a while with no problems but wanted more memory so I got an Extreme 3 card. The problem is that the box that should pop up (XP machine) when I insert the card does not seem to want to pop up. When I insert the Transcend card the window opens up and gives me options of what I want to do with the media and it's content. I also have 2 SanDisc SD cards which never have problems either.
So in order to transfer the pics from my card to my computer is to open up the card's drive location and drag the pics over to a folder that I've created. Aside from plugging my camera into my computer, does anybody have any insight on this problem?

Is this an Extreme III SDHC card? The SDHC spec is slightly different from the older SD spec; SDHC-compliant devices can read SD cards (backward-compatible) , but SD readers can't handle SDHC cards (not forward compatible). You need to get a SDHC reader.

Sorry, I forgot to add that this problem is with a CF card.
My computer doesn't seem to realize that there are pictures on the card:confused::confused:
Also transferring the pics by connecting my camera isn't much of an option due to the fact that it takes a VERY long time to transfer.
Would the file system on the card make a difference? I noticed that the Extreme III has a FAT32 system as compared to the Transcend card has a FAT system.

You tossed in the reference to SanDisk SD cards; that was what threw me. How big is the Extreme III? If you open "My Computer", do you see the card? Sometimes the pop-up you see (or don't) is determined by the card, not the drive being used. Have you tried formatting it in the camera?

The card is a 4gb. I did try to format it in the camera and on the computer.
A friend suggested that maybe I got a dud.

"try to" - does that mean you got an error message?

Argh, I need to be more specific in my posts.....
I was able to format the card using both methods, no error messages recieved.

If you are able to see the CF card in My Computer and are able to pull files off of it, then the card is operating properly. The problem isn't with the card rather is in the settings of how your computer handles the device when it is detected.

There is a setting under the properties dialog that will let you tell the computer what it should do when it is detected.

I looked for and did not find the AutoPlay option as I did with my other card. a friend on another forum mentioned that my current card reader was made for a Type 1 card and that my newer card is a Type 2. going to pick up a newer card reader after work tonight and see if that helps my problem. I will follow up after I try that tonight.

Sorry, insert your card, and under my computer right click on the card, choose properties and then autoplay tab :)

It is not listing the AutoPlay option with the new card. With my other CF card AutoPlay is listed.

I haven't seen a SanDisk Extreme III made in the past 3 (at least) years that wasn't Type 1.

How do you prefer to transfer your files? If you use a specific program, put the card in the reader, launch the program and make sure you point the program at the card.

Well I bought a new card reader and that fixed my problem. As for the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 I was uneducated as to the difference, now I know, thank you Jon.
I'm not sure why my new card would not work with my SanDisk PC Card Adapter, makes no sense.
I usually use the transfer wizard that would pop up to move my pics to the computer but it wouldn't pop up with the new card and the card adapter. I even tried using the ZoomBrowser EX and that wouldn't even see that there were any pictures on the new Extreme III card. I don't understand why the new card and Card Adapter won't work well together but at least now I can transfer my pictures with ease with my new 'Dynex' Card Reader/Writer.
Thanks for all the ideas and support that have been offered. :D
