It got too hot. What camera? If it's still under warranty, call Canon about sending it back.

PowerShot A75 is the camera. And yes, it is still under warranty.

There was a guy on here a short while back that had a lot of trouble with this. Search "smoking" and look for "A70 Flash- Smoking".

I have experienced a small wiff of smoke coming out of my flash - an SD550. I sent it in to Canon for repair, the engineers looked at it, they were not able to reproduce it.
They say the camera is within specification :) with no problems found.
I expect that dust is getting in the flash compartment. When taking a picture in the dark, the flash puts out a great deal of power and ignites the dust. Smoke eminates from the compartment.
Canon told me not to put my pocket camera in my pocket. :)

I was informed by my wife that she noticed it smoking once again, 9 months after geting the repaired unit from canon.
They hypothisized that it was dust in the flash unit that was burnt off when the flash fired.
I guess the amount of flash is governed by the darkness of the subject matter and at night the flash fires particularly hot and thus has a greater propensity to smoke.
This is my third digital camera and my first smoking flash. Seems like a design flaw.
