Heya all,

Just a general question... how soon after buying your first SLR (not necessarily digital... ) did you buy your second lens? I'm wondering about wayyy back when you just started photography. Cos that's what I am doing right now... just starting photography and *already* ordering my lens.

Sad thing is, I already have 2. 18-55mm kit lens, and my father's old 35-105mm from his EOS650.

I haven't even really took the drebel out to play with yet, but I want a new lens already. I want that 50mm f/1.8. Am I making a mistake? Well let me give you my rationale... I shoot lotsa indoor photos. f/3.5 isn't wide enough for me!! Ahh... and it's really cold outside, sooo I don't really wanna go out there and shoot.

So, what do you think? Turn on more lights, and stick with my two lenses... or order that 50 f/1.8 already? My wallet really hates me now...

I bought my second lens before I even got my first dSLR. I hadn't owned any SLR since my old Minolta (just digital point and shoots) and while I was waiting for the 20D to be delivered I went and got the 50mm f/1.8 and a 1Gb memory card, based on the high recommendations on this forum at the time. I knew the kit lens was not very good, and rather than be disappointed with the camera (which I was with the kit lens), I decided to get this highly rated prime to see what the camera could do.

Go ahead and get the 50. I have it, and it is one of my favorite lenses, and has helped me learn a on about photography..

I just ordered my second lens today!

I have only one lens for my D60 at the moment and its a variable wide angle (24-70mm). The lens I got today was a zoom/telephoto (70-300mm). I have had my D60 for less than a year but I am tired of saying "gee i really wish I had a zoom lens".

Im by no means an expert, but if you shoot mainly indoors, shooting with a f/3.5 maximum aperature is probably forcing you to use either flashes or higher ISO's (or tripods). If it were me in your situation, I would buy the f/1.8 and be thrilled with it. Because the way I see it . . if your current gear doesnt do what you need it to, then get the gear that does.

But like I said I'm just a beginner like you so . . . . .

I purchased my first lens before the body............I purchased all my bodies used, so when I went for my first body, I needed to test it. Went to a local store in the city I was going to pick up the body and got a 50 1.8................

Never purchased a kit.......

The second lens was about a week or two after I got the Camera and 1st lens... and it was a trade in.. brought the first lens back.

i bought my second lens together with the first body!

a friend of mine gave me a 24-85 he didn't use anymore and he knew i was looking for a canon DSLR body, 2 months later i bought the D30 with the 28-135IS.

as for the 50mm 1.8, you should get it! it's a great lens for indoor shooting and it's not at all expensive so your wallet should not be to much upset ;)

If we're going waaaaayyyyy back, I don't remember... First slr was a Minolta XG7, and I only bought a something like three lenses over the span of 20+ years. Since going digital in November of 2003, I think I've bought a dozen.

Thank god for well paying employment.

I bought my first SLR with 50mm f/1.4 lens in September 1970. Then I got a telephoto about six months later.

Of course, I was only a tiny child at the time.

I bought two lenses at the same time as my first SLR (a Rebel 2000).

I bought my EOS500 with a 35-105 (not 100% sure about the numbers) in 1995 and six months later I bought the 100-300USM because I had not enough tele.
about a year later I bought a sigma 18-35 and another year later a tamron 28-200 (used mostly as walkaround lens...)

Now I hope that all 4 will work with my 20D arriving next week

I ordered the body and 3 lenses at the same time. Wallet was a lot lighter after the fact. All the lenses were the fastest made (all telephoto 2.8's).

Heheh... I ordered it. I still haven't paid off the camera yet. This is baaad... though I will have a nice lens for indoor shooting! Can't wait till it comes in... $25 for shipping  And I gotta wait 2 weeks too. Blah.

Anyway... I think my next lens will be the 70-200 f/4L. And I'm definitely holding off till I've got my camera paid off.

Unless I can finance it somehow......
... oi credit is making my life difficult! Lol!
